Famines are sustained, extreme shortages of food among discrete populations sufficient to cause high rates of mortality. Signs and symptoms of prolonged food deprivation include loss of fat and subcutaneous tissue, depression, apathy, and weakness, which progress to immobility and death of the individual, often from superimposed respiratory or other ...

Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a major cause of pain and disability in patients with autoimmune connective tissue diseases (CTDs), particularly systemic sclerosis (SSc). The clinician must perform a comprehensive clinical assessment in patients with RP to differentiate between primary (idiopathic) and secondary RP, in particular (for rheumatologists ...

Raynaud's phenomenon is episodic digital ischemia provoked by cold and emotion; it is associated with other disorders, such as Raynaud's syndrome, especially the connective tissue diseases. Recent information suggests links with Sjögren's syndrome, malignancy, and obstructive vascular disease.

Raynaud's phenomenon may be primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Primary Raynaud's phenomenon is very common in young women, especially in cool climates. Treatment of patients with primary disease is usually much more successful than treatment of patients with secondary disease. Most patients respond to conservative measures.

We reviewed 40 spinal fusions done prior to Risser stage I for idiopathic and paralytic scoliosis to evaluate postoperative curve progression. The 39 patients who had posterior fusion alone had progressive angulation and rotation of the spine over the postoperative follow-up period.

The classification of Raynaud's phenomenon has been complicated by various confusing labels, including Raynaud's disease and Raynaud's syndrome. To improve clarity and to allow for uniformity in reporting, most investigators agree that only the terms primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon should be used for patient classification. The prevalence of

The underlying diagnosis of Capgras delusion is not found to be exclusively paranoid schizophrenia, nor is the sex exclusively female, as once was believed. Organic factors play a predominant role in many patients, and 41% of the cases are males. The age at diagnosis in those considered to be schizophrenic is older than is usually expected.

In 1968, Carl Hewitt introduce PLANNER, a "procedural deductive system." [Hewitt 72] It featured some very innovative concepts for the theorem-proving community of that time: the procedural interpretation of deduction, pattern-directed procedure invocation, an indexed data base of assertions and programs, and nondeterminism (backtracking).
