Insights to Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase (PAL) and Secondary Metabolism in Orchids: An in silico Approach

Biochemical Genetics, 2023
The phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) catalyses the first step of phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway which leads to the biosynthesis of a diverse group of secondary metabolites. Orchids serve as a rich source of metabolites and the availability of genome or transcriptome for selected orchid species provides an opportunity to analyse the PAL genes in ...

Regulation of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene family in wood forming tissue of Populus trichocarpa

Planta, 2013
Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) catalyzes the initial step of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in plants. Five PAL genes (PtrPAL1 to 5) have been identified in Populus trichocarpa. These genes are classified into two subgroups according to their transcript sequence similarity and tissue specificity.

Stimulation of L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity by D-phenylalanine in germinating seeds

Plant Science Letters, 1975
Abstract D-Phenylalanine, contrary to its L-stereoisomer causes an increase in L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity during the culture of dormant and stratified apple embryos and during the germination of mustard, rape and oat seeds. None of the other six pairs of L- and D-aminoacids tested caused a comparable effect. It was demonstrated that

Effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) on strawberry PAL (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase) and TAL (tyrosine ammonia-lyase) enzyme activities

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 1998
Gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) treatments (30 and 60 μg litre -1 ) were applied to young plants (Fragaria ananassa cv Chandler). Fruits were harvested at various developmental stages (14, 21, 28 and 35 days from fruit set). Weight and size, phenolic compounds (total polyphenols and anthocyanins) and enzyme activities, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and ...

The Arabidopsis phenylalanine ammonia lyase gene family: kinetic characterization of the four PAL isoforms

Phytochemistry, 2004
In Arabidopsis thaliana, four genes have been annotated as provisionally encoding PAL. In this study, recombinant native AtPAL1, 2, and 4 were demonstrated to be catalytically competent for l-phenylalanine deamination, whereas AtPAL3, obtained as a N-terminal His-tagged protein, was of very low activity and only detectable at high substrate ...

Production of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL): isolation and evaluation of yeast strains suitable for commercial production of l-phenylalanine

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1987
Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase (PAL) containing microorganisms were isolated from a wide variety of natural habitats. The best 21 strains to emerge from the primary screen were screened for PAL activities in both directions using l-phenylalanine and t-cinnamate substrates.

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H) and catechins (flavan-3-ols) accumulation in tea

Functional & Integrative Genomics, 2009
Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase are important enzymes in allocating significant amounts of carbon from phenylalanine into the biosynthesis of several important secondary metabolites. Tea is an important crop of commerce known for its beverage and medicinally important flavonoid compounds, mainly catechins.

Changes in the contents of phenolic substances, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and tyrosine ammonia-lyase (TAL) accompanying chilling-injury of eggplant fruit

Scientia Horticulturae, 1979
Abstract The mechanism of browning, which is a typical chilling-injury of eggplant fruit ( Solanum melongena L.), was investigated by determining the changes of phenolic substances, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and tyrosine ammonia-lyase (TAL) either during storage at 1°C or after exposing fruit to low temperature for various periods ...

Occurrence of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase (PAL) in isolated tapetum cells ofTulipa anthers

Protoplasma, 1983
1. Cells and protoplasts were isolated from the tapetum in order to demonstrate the importance of this tissue in the phenylpropanoid metabolism of the anther loculus. It was our purpose to investigate the localization of the key phenylpropanoid enzyme, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, within the tapetum and the other anther tissues. 2.

Light-mediated changes in the properties of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) in pea buds

Plant Science Letters, 1973
Abstract Differences in properties of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) extracted from the buds of 7-day-old dark-grown pea seedlings and the buds of 7-day-old dark-grown pea seedlings treated with 6 h white light are demonstrated. Attempts to separate these two forms of PAL with normal techniques employed for protein separation have proved negative.
