Light-Harvesting Nanorods Based on Pheophorbide-Appending Cellulose
Biomacromolecules, 2013In contrast to the success in artificial DNA- and peptide-based nanostructures, the ability of polysaccharides to self-assemble into one-, two-, and three-dimensional nanostructures are limited. Here, we describe a strategy for designing and fabricating nanorods using a regioselectively functionalized cellulose derivative at the air-water interface in ...

Photocytotoxic Pheophorbide-Related Compounds fromAglaonema simplex
Chemistry & Biodiversity, 2005In our screening program for new photosensitizers from the Malaysian biodiversity, we found five pheophorbide-related compounds from the leaves and stems of Aglaonema simplex. Detailed spectroscopic analyses showed that compounds 1-3 and 5 are pheophorbide and hydroxy pheophorbide derivatives of chlorophyll a and b.

Purification of chlorophylls, pheophytins and pheophorbides for specific activity determinations
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, 1962Abstract Methods for the purification of 14 C-labelled chlorophylls a and b and of their respective pheophytins, pheophorbides and pyropheophorbides, to constant specific activity are presented. Data are provided showing the specific activities of these compounds obtained from a variety of plants which had been fed [I- 14 C]acetate, [2- 14 C ...

Pheophorbides as photosensitizers for the photodynamic therapy of tumors
Proceedings of SPIE, 1995Quantum yields for formation of singlet molecular oxygen have been measured for sodium pheophorbides (Na-Phdes) a and b in aqueous and non-aqueous media. Measurements have been made for both steady-state and pulsed laser excitation with the resultant singlet molecular oxygen being detected by photo-oxygenation reactions or time-resolved luminescence ...

Potent virucidal effect of pheophorbide a and pyropheophorbide a on enveloped viruses
Journal of Natural Medicines, 2010In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of ethanol and aqueous extracts from a stem of Opuntia ficus indica on replication of three kinds of viruses: two enveloped viruses [herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), influenza A virus (IFV-A)], and one non-enveloped virus [poliovirus type 1 (PV-1)].

Effective photocleavage of DNA by pheophorbide a.
Nucleic acids symposium series, 1992Remarkably effective photocleavage of plasmid DNA with pheophorbide a, as a visible light sensitizer, has been found for the first time. DNA is photocleaved even in the absence of oxygen. The novel oxygen-independent scission is ascribed to specific photodynamic function of the ring V in pheophorbide a.

Abstract The pheophytin and pheophorbid actinometers were studied. It was found that the quantum yield Φ is independent of wavelength between 644 mμ and 436 mμ. The quantum yield Φ was found to be 0.74 ± 0.04 when measured as a function of light photons absorbed and oxygen utilized.
