Zooplankton grazing reduces the persistence of an anthropogenic pollution marker in lake water

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 8, Page 1870-1881, August 2024.
Abstract Wastewater treatment plant effluents release microbiological pollutants, including the intI1 gene (integrases of class 1 integron), which has been proposed as a target for monitoring anthropogenic pollution in surface waters. This gene correlates with antibiotic resistance genes, making it an important proxy for genetic contamination in ...

Cryptic diversification in ancient asexuals: evidence from the bdelloid rotifer Philodina flaviceps [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, 2007
AbstractBdelloid rotifers, darwinulid ostracods and some oribatid mites have been called ‘ancient asexuals’ as they speciated and survived over long‐term evolutionary timescale without sexual recombination. Data on their genetic diversification are contrasting: within‐species diversification is present mostly at a continental scale in a parthenogenetic

Low‐Molecular Weight Compounds that Extend the Chronological Lifespan of Yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Schizosaccharomyces pombe

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2024.
Budding and fission yeasts are excellent model organisms for research on aging and lifespan regulation. Chronological lifespan, a definition of yeast lifespan, refers to the survival period of a cell population under nondividing conditions. In this review, the low‐molecular weight compounds are summarized that extend the chronological lifespan of ...

Environmental Condition for Producing Eggs of Rotifera Philodina erythrophthalma.

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Water Treatment Biology, 2000
The effect of mold, microbial pesticide Verticillium lecanii F126-12-3M on the egg-production of rotifera Philodina erythrophthalma, contributing to purification of wastewater was examined in batch culture experiment. The result indicated that the number of eggs was several times higher in the cultures with supernatant of mold than those of the control.

Effects of Different Carbon Sources on the Growth and Production of Rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) in a Zero‐Water Exchange Biofloc Culture System

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
Brachionus plicatilis is considered an indispensable first live feed for many fish and crustacean larvae; the demand for the species has increased globally. The mass production of the rotifer involves quality microalga and a standard diet; this culture is expensive and needs a skilled workforce.

EST based phylogenomics of Syndermata questions monophyly of Eurotatoria

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2008
Background The metazoan taxon Syndermata comprising Rotifera (in the classical sense of Monogononta+Bdelloidea+Seisonidea) and Acanthocephala has raised several hypotheses connected to the phylogeny of these animal groups and the included subtaxa.
