Sustainable approach in phlorotannin recovery from macroalgae

Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering, 2018
In this present study, alcohol/salt liquid biphasic system was used to extract phlorotannin from brown macroalgae. Liquid biphasic system is a new green technology that integrated with various processes into one-step, by concentrating, separating and purifying the bioproduct in a unit operation.

Optimization of ultrasound-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent extraction for the recovery of bioactive polysaccharides and phlorotannins from the brown alga Ecklonia radiata.

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules
Phlorotannins and polysaccharides are widespread in brown seaweeds. This study shows that ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES-UAE) enhances the yields of phlorotannins and polysaccharides from the brown ...

Antioxidant activities of crude phlorotannins from Sargassum hemiphyllum

Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology [Medical Sciences], 2016
Brown algae are well known as a source of biologically active compounds, especially those having antioxidant activities, such as phlorotannins. In this study we examined the antioxidant activities of crude phlorotannins extracts (CPEs) obtained from Sargassum hemiphyllum (SH) and fractionated according to the molecular weights.

Quantitative determination of major phlorotannins in Ecklonia stolonifera

Archives of Pharmacal Research, 2010
Ecklonia stolonifera is a rich source of phlorotannins, which are responsible for the potent pharmacological effects associated with this seaweed. The purpose of this study was to develop a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method for the simultaneous determination of three major phlorotannins, eckol, dieckol, and ...

Exploring the fate of phlorotannins from Laminaria digitata across the gastrointestinal tract: Insights into susceptibility and bioactivity prior and post gastrointestinal digestion.

Food Research International
Phlorotannins are phenolic compounds exclusive from brown macroalgae endowed with promising bioactive properties. However, considering that diet is their main route of entrance to our system, gastrointestinal digestion might affect such bioactive ...

Extraction and Purification of Phlorotannins from Brown Algae

2015
The interest in the physiological roles and bioactivities of plant phenols has increased over the past decades. In seaweeds, many investigations have dealt with phenolic compounds of Phaeophyceae (phlorotannins), even though little is known so far about the ecophysiological variations of their pool or their biosynthetic pathways.

Phlorotannins are Polyphenolic Metabolites of Brown Algae

Russian Journal of Marine Biology, 2018
This review is devoted to the analysis of publications on studies of phlorotannins, which are polyphenolic metabolites of brown algae. Their properties, the pathway of biosynthesis, and the structural diversity and classification of phlorotannins, as well as the methods for their isolation and determination of their metabolic profiles, are examined ...
