Characterization of the Phosphofructokinase Gene Family in Rice and Its Expression Under Oxygen Deficiency Stress

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2013
Plants possess two types of phosphofructokinase proteins for phosphorylation of fructose-6-phosphate, the ATP-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFK) and the pyrophosphate-(PPi) dependent pyrophosphate-fructose-6-phosphate-phosphotransferase (PFP).

MiR-135 suppresses glycolysis and promotes pancreatic cancer cell adaptation to metabolic stress by targeting phosphofructokinase-1

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma must adapt to a nutrient-poor microenvironment. Here, the authors show that miR-135 accumulates in response to glutamine deprivation and inhibits aerobic glycolysis by targeting phosphofructokinase-1, thereby redirecting ...

Snail reprograms glucose metabolism by repressing phosphofructokinase PFKP allowing cancer cell survival under metabolic stress

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Cancer cell survival under metabolic stress is a critical step for metastasis. Here, the authors show that under glucose deprivation, Snail, a key regulator of the metastatic process, promotes survival by diverting glucose to the pentose phosphate ...

Stabilization of phosphofructokinase 1 platelet isoform by AKT promotes tumorigenesis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Phosphofructokinase 1 (PFK1) plays a critical role in glycolysis. Here the authors show that PFK1 platelet isoform is upregulated in Glioblastoma and is required for tumor growth mechanistically, such upregulation is due to an increased stability induced

TAp73-induced phosphofructokinase-1 transcription promotes the Warburg effect and enhances cell proliferation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
TAp73 is a structural homolog of the tumor suppressor p53. Here they show that TAp73 is critical for promoting glycolysis as it stimulates the transcriptional expression of liver type of phosphofructokinase-1 (PFKL), which catalyzes the committed step in

Phosphofructokinase

open access: hybridJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1967
Abstract Purified rabbit muscle phosphofructokinase required K+ ion for maximal activity and was inactive at pH 7 unless the Mg++ concentration exceeded the total adenosine triphosphate concentration. Enzymatic activity was proportional to sulfhydryl reduction, and was reversibly lost by sulfhydryl oxidation with oxidized glutathione.

Activation by phosphate of yeast phosphofructokinase. [PDF]

open access: hybridJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1977
The activity of yeast phosphofructokinase assayed in vitro at physiological concentrations of known substrates and effectors is 100-fold lower than the glycolytic flux observed in vivo. Phosphate synergistically with AMP activates the enzyme to a level within the range of the physiological needs.

PFKM-Mediated Glycolysis: A Pathway for ASIC1 to Enhance Cell Survival in the Acidic Microenvironment of Liver Cancer [PDF]

open access: yesBiomolecules
The acidic tumor microenvironment plays a critical role in promoting liver cancer cell survival by enhancing glycolysis and adaptive mechanisms. Acid-sensing ion channel 1 (ASIC1) is a key regulator of pH sensing, but its role in liver cancer progression

Light‐emitting diode irradiation targets aerobic glycolysis in cancer‐associated fibroblasts to inhibit metabolic coupling with colon cancer cells [PDF]

open access: yesAnn Gastroenterol Surg
Blue LED irradiation targeted metabolic coupling between CAFs and colon cancer cells. Abstract Background The concepts examined in tumor metabolism research have been moving away from cancer cells themselves and the tumor microenvironment has become a focus of investigation.

Effects of insulin and actin on phosphofructokinase activity and cellular distribution in skeletal muscle

open access: yesAnais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2004
In this work, we report evidences that the association of phosphofructokinase and F-actin can be affected by insulin stimulation in rabbit skeletal muscle homogenates and that this association can be a mechanism of phos-phofructokinase regulation ...
