Phospholipase A2s (PLA2s) are a group of enzymes that hydrolyze the sn-2 position of phospholipids to generate fatty acids and lysophospholipids, which serve as lipid mediators or their precursors. Mammalian genomes encode genes for more than 30 PLA2s or related enzymes, which are subdivided into several groups on the basis of their structures ...

Lipoprotein-Associated Phospholipase A2
Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 2006Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (LP-PLA2) is an emerging inflammatory marker that is used to assess the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and associated events. Several epidemiologic studies have demonstrated an independent association between plasma Lp-PLA2 concentration and risk for cardiovascular events.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is an enzyme present in snake and other venoms and body fluids. We measured PLA2 catalytic activity in tissue homogenates of 22 species representing the classes Anthozoa, Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa and Cubozoa of the phylum Cnidaria. High PLA2 levels were found in the hydrozoan fire coral Millepora sp.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) catalytic activity was measured in aqueous extracts of 83 freeze-dried specimens representing 55 marine sponge species collected from the east coast of Australia including the Great Barrier Reef. High levels (>500 u/l) of PLA2 activity (defined as the amount of activity that releases 1 micromol of fatty acid per min) were found ...

Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 2003
Considerable progress has been made in characterizing the individual participant enzymes and their relative contributions in the generation of eicosanoids, lipid mediators derived from arachidonic acid, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. However, the role of individual phospholipase (PL) A(2) enzymes in providing arachidonic acid to the ...

Regulatory Functions of Phospholipase A2
Critical Reviews in Immunology, 1997Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) plays crucial roles in diverse cellular responses, including phospholipid digestion and metabolism, host defense and signal transduction. PLA2 provides precursors for generation of eicosanoids, such as prostaglandins (PGa) and leukotrienes (LTs), when the cleaved fatty acid is arachidonic acid, platelet-activating factor (PAF ...

Immunochemical relatedness between secretory phospholipase A2 and intracellular·phospholipase A2
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1985The immunochemical relationship between rat pancreatic phospholipase A2 and rat splenic phospholipase A2 was examined with the use of anti-rat pancreatic phospholipase A2 antibody as a probe. The immunoelectrophoretic patterns showed that the antibody cross-reacted with the splenic enzyme.
