Nutrient recovery from digestates : techniques and end-products [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In nitrate vulnerable zones application of animal manure to land is limited. Digestate from anaerobic digestion plants competes with manure for nutrient disposal on arable land, which forms a serious hinder for the biogas sector to develop in these ...

New opportunities for bioscaffold‐enabled spinal cord injury repair

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of bioscaffolds for spinal cord injury repair. We summarize the effects of bioscaffold properties on SCI repair, highlight different types of bioscaffolds, various fabrication strategies, and in vivo transformations for the clinical development of SCI‐repairing bioscaffolds.

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

THE IMPACT OF POLLUTION CONTROLS ON LIVESTOCK-CROP PRODUCERS [PDF]

open access: yes
A discrete-time, continuous-space model of a livestock- crop producer is used to examine the long-run effects of phosphorus runoff controls on optimal livestock production and manure application practices.

Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Effect of Different Types of Biochar Applications and Phosphate Fertilizer on the Quality and Yield of Edamame Soybeans on Andisols

open access: yesCaraka Tani: Journal of Sustainable Agriculture
Edamame soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivation in phosphorus-limited Andisols presents a formidable challenge due to restricted phosphorus availability despite high phosphorus retention.

Utilization of Waste Materials Using the Müller–Kühne Process—A Life Cycle Inventory Study

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
This study presents a Life Cycle Inventory of the Müller–Kühne process (MKP), which converts gypsum waste into sulfuric acid and cement clinker. The MKP outperforms conventional cement production regarding material yield, though its specific energy demand is higher. Consequently, potentials for circular gypsum waste utilization are discussed.
