Fluorescence diagnosis of metastatic lymph nodes using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in a mouse model of colon cancer. [PDF]
[Background]Lymph node metastasis is one of the most critical prognostic factors in patients with colorectal cancer. Although regional lymph nodes should be surgically resected and pathologically examined, techniques for the intraoperative diagnosis of ...

Several types of photosensitizers such as 5-aminolevulinic acid are progenitors of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). PpIX accumulates in cancer cells and has photosensitivity. Based on these characteristics, they are used in photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Reducing understaging of bladder cancer with the aid of photodynamic
Background: The authors evaluated the role of photodynamic cystoscopy in the detection of additional urothelial lesions, mainly carcinoma in situ, that would not be detected solely with white light cystoscopy, leading to disease understaging.

Trithio‐naphthalic anhydride‐based photosensitizer for photodynamic activity
A trithio‐naphthalic anhydride photosensitizer (NapS) is created by simple thionation, switching excited‐state pathways to deliver both type I and type II reactive oxygen species. NapS enables efficient photodynamic therapy under normoxia and hypoxia, achieving strong cancer cell killing with low dark toxicity.
