The ability of intermediate-band Stromgren photometry to correctly identify dwarf, subgiant, and giant stars and provide stellar metallicities and surface gravities

open access: yes, 2010
[Abridged] Several large scale photometric and spectroscopic surveys are being undertaken to provide a more detailed picture of the Milky Way. Given the necessity of generalisation in the determination of, e.g., stellar parameters when tens and hundred ...

Infrared Variability of the Gliese 569B System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Gliese 569B is a multiple brown dwarf system whose exact nature has been the subject of several investigations over the past few years. Interpretation has partially relied on infra-red photometry and spectroscopy of the resolved components of the system.

Current and Future Applications of Reverberation-Mapped Quasars in Cosmology

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2019
Reverberation mapping technique (RM) is an important milestone that has elevated our understanding of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) demographics, giving information about the kinematics and the structure of the Broad Line Region (BLR).

Hippocampal Chandelier Cells Modulate Seizure Susceptibility and Severity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The axon initial segment (AIS), crucial for action potential initiation, serves as a prime locus for controlling network activity. Chandelier Cells (ChCs), evolved in the mammals, intricately target AISs, acting as gatekeepers for neuronal firing. Diminishing ChC input makes animals more prone to developing seizures, whereas fortifying this connection ...

Better age estimations using UV-optical colours: breaking the age-metallicity degeneracy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We demonstrate that the combination of GALEX UV photometry in the FUV (~1530 angstroms) and NUV (~2310 angstroms) passbands with optical photometry in the standard U,B,V,R,I filters can efficiently break the age-metallicity degeneracy.

Inhibiting Liver‐Derived C3 Protein Rescues Anesthesia/Surgery‐Induced Cognitive Impairment, Synaptic Disorders, and Microglial Phagocytosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study provides evidence that anesthesia/surgery can induce the BBB breakdown and promote the release of hepatogenous C3 protein into the blood. This surgical dual factors ultimately drove C3 to cross the damaged BBB and selectively colocalize with C3aR in the hippocampus, which results in structural and functional injury of synapse, C3aR‐mediated ...

Unlocking the secrets of stellar haloes using combined star counts and surface photometry

open access: yes, 2012
The stellar haloes of galaxies can currently be studied either through observations of resolved halo stars or through surface photometry. Curiously, the two methods appear to give conflicting results, as a number of surface photometry measurements have ...

Cortico‐Striatal‐Midbrain Circuit Dysregulation Underlying MK‐801 Induced Impulsivity and the Ameliorative Effects of SEP

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Impulsivity is a symptom across multiple psychiatric disorders, yet its neural basis remains elusive. This study shows that the NMDAR antagonist MK‐801 elevates dopamine release and disrupts neuronal selectivity in the nucleus accumbens, leading to impulsive behavior.

Mass Photometry

open access: yesAnnual Review of Biophysics
Mass photometry (MP) is a technology for the mass measurement of biological macromolecules in solution. Its mass accuracy and resolution have transformed label-free optical detection into a quantitative measurement, enabling the identification of distinct species in a mixture and the characterization of their relative abundances. Its applicability to a
