Dreamy Dwellings: How the Sleep Environment Affects Sleep Health in Adults—A Narrative Review
ABSTRACT Sufficient high‐quality, well‐timed sleep is essential to health and physical, cognitive and emotional functions. Historically, environmental factors such as threats from other beings have likely constrained sleep. Newer sources of sleep disruption include modern work schedules, climate change, light pollution and noise pollution.

Abstract In the evolution of vision, changes in the number of visual opsin genes, gene conversion, amino acid sequence mutations, and gene expression levels are common molecular mechanisms in how teleost fishes adapt to different aquatic (light) environments.

Mammalian vision consists of the classic image-forming pathway involving rod and cone photoreceptors interacting through a neural network within the retina before sending signals to the brain, and a non image-forming pathway that uses a photosensitive ...

Multiphoton response of retinal rod photoreceptors
Phototransduction is the process by which light is converted into an electrical response in retinal photoreceptors. Rod photoreceptors contain a stack of (about 1000) disc membranes packed with photopigment rhodopsin molecules, which absorb the photons ...

Measurement of Photon Statistics with Live Photoreceptor Cells
We analyzed the electrophysiological response of an isolated rod photoreceptor of Xenopus laevis under stimulation by coherent and pseudo-thermal light sources. Using the suction electrode technique for single cell recordings and a fiber optics setup for

Dysflective cones: Visual function and cone reflectivity in long-term follow-up of acute bilateral foveolitis. [PDF]
PURPOSE:Confocal adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) images provide a sensitive measure of cone structure. However, the relationship between structural findings of diminished cone reflectivity and visual function is unclear.

Detectability of red-edge-shifted vegetation on terrestrial planets orbiting M stars [PDF]
We have explored the detectability of exovegetation on the surface of a terrestrial planet orbiting an M star. The exovegetation is responsible for producing a pigment-derived surface signature that is redshifted with respect to the Earth vegetation's ...

Invisible light inside the natural blind spot alters brightness at a remote location
The natural blind spot in the visual field has been known as a large oval region that cannot receive any optical input because it corresponds to the retinal optic disk containing no rod/cone-photoreceptors. Recently, stimulation inside the blind spot was

Impaired Circadian Photoentrainment in Opn5-Null Mice
Summary: The master circadian pacemaker in mammals resides in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) and is synchronized to ambient light/dark cycles (i.e., photoentrainment). Melanopsin (Opn4) and classical rod-cone photoreceptors are believed to

Photoreceptor System for Melatonin Regulation and Phototherapy [PDF]
The present invention involves a light system for stimulating or regulating neuroendocrine, circadian, and photoneural systems in mammals based upon the discovery of peak sensitivity ranging from 425-505 nm; a light meter system for quantifying light ...
