Melatonin (MLT), N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is mainly secreted by the pineal gland. The ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) and 1H-NMR spectra of irradiated and non-irradiated MLT were measured, and phototoxicity tests of MLT, anthracene (positive control) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, negative control) were performed.

Ignorance of phototoxicity by the general biomedical community constitutes a health hazard. Certain food colorants and dyes proposed for use in angiography produce lethal effects in cells and whole organisms on light exposure but not in the dark. Yet-light-relatedness is usually neglected in toxicity studies.

Phototoxic retinal lesions are a product of advances in operative technology. Use of more powerful light sources in both anterior and posterior segment cases and an increase in surgical complexity requiring longer operative times (especially during ophthalmic training) have rendered photic injury a real danger for all surgeons.

The human eye is constantly exposed to sunlight and artificial lighting. Therefore the eye is exposed to UV-B (295-320 nm), UV-A (320-400 nm), and visible light (400-700 nm). Light is transmitted through the eye and then signals the brain directing both sight and circadian rhythm. Therefore light absorbed by the eye must be benign.

Although the occurrence of iatrogenic light-induced retinal toxicity is beyond doubt, several issues remain to be studied further. These include conflicting reports regarding the wavelength of light that is most hazardous; what mechanism contributes more significantly in the pathogenesis of light-induced retinal toxicity-photochemical or photothermal ...

Phototoxicity and photoallergy
Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, 1999Photosensitivity may be phototoxic or photoallergic. Phototoxicity is much more common. There are 2 types of phototoxicity: photodynamic, which requires oxygen, and nonphotodynamic, which does not. Reactions induced by porphyrin molecules, coal tar derivatives, and many drugs are photodynamic.

MECHANISMS OF CITRAL PHOTOTOXICITY
Photochemistry and Photobiology, 1992Abstract—Citral, a monoterpene aldehyde synthesized by several plant genera, has been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity. For the first time, we report that citral exhibits UV‐A (315–400 nm) light enhanced oxygen‐dependent toxicity against a series of Escherichia coli strains differing in DNA repair and catalase proficiency. Publisher Summary The effect of non-ionising radiation on a cell depends on the specific chemical composition within the cell, that is, on the presence of absorbing molecules or chromophores. This type of radiation must be absorbed to cause a change in the molecule as absorbed energy is required to promote a chemical change.

In conjunction with ultraviolet filtration and to further minimize the risk of phototoxic retinal damage during anterior segment surgery, the operation microscope has been modified to eliminate on demand all light entering the eye by eclipsing the pupil when the red reflex is not required. Retinal light exposure may be reduced as much as 75%.

Phototoxicity of olaquindox in the rat
Research in Veterinary Science, 1990Because of its photoallergic properties quindoxin, a growth promoting feed additive used for example in cattle raising, has been taken off the market. Recently, it appeared that the quindoxin derived olaquindox (OLAQ), used for the same purpose, also produces these light-induced side effects.
