Mechanical Activation of the Ca-Rich Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Fly Ash: Development of an Alternative Binder System

open access: yes, 2020
Mechanical activation of the calcium-rich fly ash formed in circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers was investigated to enhance the compressive strength performance of the pastes.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

A comparison of physical activation of carbon xerogels with carbon dioxide with chemical activation using hydroxides

open access: yes, 2010
peer reviewedCarbon xerogels synthesized with a fixed resorcinol/sodium carbonate molar ratio (R/C) were physically activated using CO2. The effect of activation temperature and activation time on the final properties of the activated carbon xerogels was

Comparison of the Properties of Activated Carbons Produced in One-Stage and Two-Stage Processes

open access: yesC, 2018
Activated carbons (ACs) can be produced from biomass in a thermal process either in a direct carbonization-activation process or by first carbonizing the biomass and later activating the bio-chars into activated carbons.

Physical Activity and Exercise [PDF]

open access: yesDiabetes Technology & Therapeutics, 2014
Exercise has been prescribed for diabetes treatment since at least 600 B.C. The early East Indian text, the Shushruta, described a reduction in the sweetness of urine from diabetic patients after exercise. One might think that very little could be left to discover in the field of exercise and diabetes, yet surprisingly this is far from the truth ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Factors that impact on participation in physical education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Physical education uses or employs what modern society recognises as sport and other similar activities to deliver curricular content that requires students to be physically active. However, not all students are committed to participate.

Adsorbent made with inexpensive, local resources

open access: yesOpen Engineering
An affordable local adsorbent was physically activated and modified to form a novel composite adsorbent. Similar processes were used to activate bentonite and limestone to create this low-cost local adsorbent.
