Activated: Decentering activism in and with academia [PDF]

open access: yesCompanion Publication of the 2021 Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing, 2021
Who is an activist? With the advent of activism-related scholarship in HCI and CSCW, the current challenge involves thinking about what activism is, who an activist is, and the opportunities and limitations of activism. Recently, researchers in academia and industry, such as Timnit Gebru, demonstrate a commitment to stay activated for the structural ...

To Activate or Not to Activate [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation Research, 2013
In a recent study, Watanabe et al identify a novel enhancer in the fgf10 locus that is necessary and sufficient for expression in anterior second heart field. Their results suggest a competitive mechanism in which Isl1 and Nkx2-5 bind the enhancer to activate or repress this enhancer, respectively.

Activate or Not: Learning Customized Activation [PDF]

open access: yes2021 IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), 2021
We present a simple, effective, and general activation function we term ACON which learns to activate the neurons or not. Interestingly, we find Swish, the recent popular NAS-searched activation, can be interpreted as a smooth approximation to ReLU. Intuitively, in the same way, we approximate the more general Maxout family to our novel ACON family ...

Detection of Glycosylated Markers From Cancer Stem Cells With ColoSTEM Dx Kit for Earlier Prediction of Colon Cancer Aggressiveness

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology, 2022
Nowadays, colon cancer prognosis still difficult to predict, especially in the early stages. Recurrences remain elevated, even in the early stages after curative surgery.

Buffy Coat Processing Impacts on Monocytes’ Capacity to Present Lipid Antigens

open access: yesBiomedicines, 2023
Buffy Coats, generated from a blood donor’s whole blood bag unit, are commonly used in biomedical research as a source of leukocytes due to the high number of cells that can be recovered from each Buffy Coat.

Dance as an agency of change in an age of totalitarianism

open access: yesApproaching Religion, 2022
This article identifies two different paths where the amnesia described by Hannah- Arendt and the fragmentation identified by Willie James Jennings of our historical past has distorted how people today view dan-cing.

Molecular brakes regulating mTORC1 activation in skeletal muscle following synergist ablation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The goal of the current work was to profile positive (mTORC1 activation, autocrine/paracrine growth factors) and negative [AMPK, unfolded protein response (UPR)] pathways that might regulate overload-induced mTORC1 activation with the hypothesis that a ...

A Label-Free Cell Sorting Approach to Highlight the Impact of Intratumoral Cellular Heterogeneity and Cancer Stem Cells on Response to Therapies

open access: yesCells, 2022
Cancer stem cells play a crucial role in tumor initiation, metastasis, and resistance to treatment. Cellular heterogeneity and plasticity complicate the isolation of cancer stem cells.

Inherited immunodeficiencies associated with proximal and distal defects in T cell receptor signaling and co-signaling

open access: yesBiomedical Journal, 2022
T lymphocytes are central cells of adaptive immunity. Activation of T lymphocytes by the antigen receptor of T cells (TCR) and co-stimulatory molecules involve specific signaling components and cascades.

Transcriptional activators and activation mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yesProtein & Cell, 2007
Transcriptional activators are required to turn on the expression of genes in a eukaryotic cell. Activators bound to the enhancer can facilitate either the recruitment of RNA polymerase II to the promoter or its elongation. This article examines a few selected issues in understanding activator functions and activation mechanisms.
