Physical and mechanical properties of wood thermally modified in organic oils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, the following values of the physical and mechanical properties of thermally modified wood in organic oils of: water absorption, deliquescence, the maximum shrinkage, the MOR in static bending, compression and shear parallel to grain, the

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Influence of mean value of the modulus of elasticity in compression parallel to the grain on the design of timber trusses

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Technology, 2022
The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190 (Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas [ABNT], 1997) recommends adopting the mean value of the modulus of elasticity to compression in the direction parallel to the grain (Ec0,m) in the calculation of ...

Handmade Clay Bricks: Chemical, Physical and Mechanical Properties [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Architectural Heritage, 2009
The clay brick masonry that is much used in historical structures often is in a rather poor state of conservation. In order to intervene correctly in these buildings, it is convenient to characterize the old material. For this purpose, a large sample of clay brick specimens from the 12th to 19th centuries were collected from six Portuguese monasteries ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Production of Periwinkle Shell Reinforced Grindstone

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management, 2022
The study involves the use of periwinkle shell particles as reinforcement in the production of grindstone to meliorate its physical and mechanical properties. The assessment of the properties of the periwinkle shell reinforced concrete grindstone showed

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

The Investigation of the Utilization Impact of Alnus subcordata Waste and Poplar Wood in Particle Board Production [PDF]

open access: yesتحقیقات علوم چوب و کاغذ ایران, 2015
In this study, the effect of using waste of Alnus subcordata and Poplar wood in manufacturing particle board was investigated. The particle boards were produced by adding (0-25-50-75-100)% alder branches with poplar wood and two press temperatures 170°C ...
