Creation and Divine Providence in Plotinus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper, we argue that Plotinus denies deliberative forethought about the physical cosmos to the demiurge on the basis of certain basic and widely shared Platonic and Aristotelian assumptions about the character of divine thought.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

DESCARTES AND THE METEOROLOGY OF THE WORLD [PDF]

open access: yesSocietate şi Politică, 2012
Descartes claimed that he thought he could deduce the assumptions of his Meteorology by the contents of the Discourse. He actually began the Meteorology with assumptions.

Inferring adversarial behaviour in cyber‐physical power systems using a Bayesian attack graph approach

open access: yesIET Cyber-Physical Systems, 2023
Highly connected smart power systems are subject to increasing vulnerabilities and adversarial threats. Defenders need to proactively identify and defend new high‐risk access paths of cyber intruders that target grid resilience.

Quantum mechanics from five physical assumptions

open access: yes, 2011
Five physical assumptions are proposed that together entail the general qualitative results, including the Born rule, of non-relativistic quantum mechanics by physical and information-theoretic reasoning alone. Two of these assumptions concern fundamental symmetries of physical interactions.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

A Comparison of Spin Observable Predictions for RHIC [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
There have been many versions of spin-dependent parton distributions in the literature. Although most agree with present data within uncertainties, they are based upon different physical assumptions.

On the physical contents of q-deformed Minkowski spaces

open access: yes, 1994
Some physical aspects of $q$-deformed spacetimes are discussed. It is pointed out that, under certain standard assumptions relating deformation and quantization, the classical limit (Poisson bracket description) of the dynamics is bound to contain ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

An application of semigroup theory to a fragmentation equation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The process of fragmentation arises in many physical situations, including polymer degradation, droplet breakage and rock crushing and grinding. Under suitable assumptions, the evolution of the size distribution c(x, t), where x represents particle size ...
