Physostigmine in familial ataxias

Neurology, 1977
Physostigmine was given to 12 patients with various spincerebellar degenerations, and neurologic examinations were recorded on video tapes and assessed on a semiquantitative scale. Forty minutes after a single dose, the scores improved by 35.7 +/- 4.7 percent (means +/- SEM).

Physostigmine Antagonizes Ketamine

Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1980
In a random cross-over double-blind trial, the effects of intravenous physostigmine salicylate (2.0 mg) and placebo were observed in seven healthy volunteers 10 minutes after the intravenous administration of 1.5 mg/kg of ketamine. Recovery time was significantly shorter after physostigmine than after placebo.

Physostigmine and Neuromuscular Transmissiona

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1993
Single channel studies carried out in cultured rat myoballs and cultured hippocampal neurons, and ion flux studies performed on Torpedo electrocyte membrane vesicles, showed that physostigmine (Phy), a well-established acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, interacts directly with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR).

The absolute configuration of physostigmine

Tetrahedron, 1969
Abstract Physostigmine, the toxic alkaloid of the Calabar bean, has been degraded systematically to (+)-1,3-dimethyl-3-ethyloxindole (Chart 1), which contains only one of the original asymmetric centers. The enantiomorph of this oxindole was then synthesized from (R)-(−)-2-methyl-2-phenylbutyric add, a substance of known configuration, allowing the ...

Physostigmine and resistance to extinction

Psychopharmacologia, 1972
In order to study the relationship between pharmacologically induced hippocampal theta rhythm and resistance to extinction of instrumental responding, three groups of rats were trained on a discrete-trial FR 10 schedule of reinforcement, one group receiving injections of physostigmine (producing hippocampal theta rhythm) and the other two groups saline
