ABSTRACT We developed and evaluated a fishery‐dependent catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE)‐based proxy index for juvenile Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) recruitment‐related variability in the southeastern coastal waters of Korea. The proxy was constructed from bimonthly CPUE of the smallest juvenile size class (20–40 mm) in the anchovy drag‐net ...

A model of near‐sea ice phytoplankton blooms
Arctic phytoplankton spring blooms have increased in magnitude and extent over the past two decades, particularly in waters near the sea ice edge.

ABSTRACT Microeukaryotes are important components of microbial food webs in saline and alkaline lakes, yet their diversity and distribution across distinct microhabitats remain poorly understood. We characterized microeukaryotic communities associated with microbialites, microbial mats, hypersaline waters, and sediments in the desiccating maar lake ...

Correlations Between a Cyanobacteria Bloom's Decline and Environmental Dynamics. [PDF]
Lake Kainui is an ombrogenous peat lake that is eutrophic and has frequent cyanobacterial blooms. This research aimed to elucidate the factors that correlated with cyanobacterial bloom decline in Lake Kainui. Abiotic and biotic variables in Lake Kainui

Abstract Particle size and physical properties such as stiffness and adhesiveness affect sinking velocity and flux in the ocean, yet conventional two‐dimensional measurements lack accuracy and mechanical information. In this study, we applied atomic force microscopy (AFM) to quantify three‐dimensional size and physical properties of marine particles ...

Quantifying Land–Sea Connectivity Through Remotely Sensed River Plumes
Abstract Coastal ecosystems are highly influenced by riverine freshwater inputs, but the nature of these influences is dynamic and hard to characterize. Here we present a method that leverages remote sensing data of river plumes to quantify land–sea connectivity.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Unveils Phytoplankton Succession in Hurricane Wakes
Abstract Hyperspectral satellite data from the NASA mission, PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem), can be used to investigate the effects of hurricanes on phytoplankton composition. Results from four Atlantic Ocean hurricanes show the expected increases in chlorophyll‐a concentration associated with deepening of the mixed layer depth (MLD).
