Responses of Water Quality Parameters to El Niño in the Curuá‐Una Reservoir, Amazon Basin
ABSTRACT The El Niño phenomenon in the Amazon is associated with extreme drought and lower atmospheric humidity, leading to environmental disturbances, such as wildfires and decreased river levels. An exceptionally intense El Niño occurred between 2015 and 2016, reaching historic magnitudes.

Satellite images are an effective tool for the detection of phytoplankton blooms, since they cause striking changes in water color. Bloom intensity can be expressed in terms of chlorophyll-a concentration.

Harmful Microcystis proliferation severely threatens aquatic ecosystems globally, but its impacts on food‐web stability remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed 1309 metagenomic samples from freshwater ecosystems across China to investigate how Microcystis abundance affects synchrony among taxa in multi‐trophic food webs (from bacteriophages to ...

The downward legacy of a phytoplankton bloom in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
Abstract Ocean particles are a heterogeneous collection, including living and dead cells, feces, mucus‐rich aggregates, and mineral shells and frustules. In the well‐lit upper ocean, phototrophic processes fuel production of particulate matter; however, only a relatively small percentage (< 10% per day) of this material (mostly detrital) escapes the ...

From net sink to episodic source: Seasonal dissolved inorganic carbon budget in an intertidal basin
Abstract The back‐barrier basin of Spiekeroog in the East Frisian Wadden Sea is a biogeochemically dynamic intertidal system that plays a key role in regulating coastal carbon fluxes and regional dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) budgets. Compared to total alkalinity, DIC fluxes in this region remain poorly quantified, limiting a comprehensive ...

Spatial and temporal features of hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry in Myponga Reservoir, South Australia. [PDF]
Understanding hydrodynamic and biogeochemical processes in lakes is fundamentally important to the management of phytoplankton population and the improvement of water quality.

Abstract Phytoplankton play a central role in ocean biogeochemistry and understanding their composition and variability is critical for monitoring marine ecosystem dynamics. Continuous spectrophotometric measurements (using a Seabird Sci. AC‐S) along ship tracks enable high‐resolution measurements of particle spectral absorption (apλ), and beam ...

Quantifying Viral Lysis in Microalgae Using Cell‐Free rRNA
Cell‐free ribosomal RNA (rRNA) dissolved in seawater provides a quantitative proxy for viral lysis in microeukaryotic phytoplankton. Incubation experiments with two distinct host–virus systems revealed marked increases in cell‐free rRNA production per cell, a proxy for lytic mortality, reaching up to 46‐ and 302‐fold relative to noninfected controls ...
