Emotional facilitation effect in the picture–word interference task: An ERP study

Picture-word interference refers to the fact that if a picture (i.e., line drawing) is presented centrally with a word superimposed, picture-naming latency is longer than if that same picture is presented alone. This phenomenon, like the Stroop phenomenon, seems to be strongly influenced by the nature of the to-be-ignored word.

The time course of picture-word interference.

If a word is printed inside the outline drawing of a concrete object, interference patterns as in Stroop research are obtained under the instruction to name the picture or to read the word.
