A CHARACTERIZATION OF RECOGNIZABLE PICTURE LANGUAGES
International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, 1992This paper first shows that REC, the family of recognizable picture languages in Giammarresi and Restivo,3 is equal to the family of picture languages accepted by two-dimensional on-line tessellation acceptors in Inoue and Nakamura.5 By using this result, we then solve open problems in Giammarresi and Restivo,3 and show that (i) REC is not closed ...

LEARNING OF RECOGNIZABLE PICTURE LANGUAGES
International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, 1992Learning of certain classes of two-dimensional picture languages is considered in this paper. Linear time algorithms that learn in the limit, from positive data the classes of local picture languages and locally testable picture languages are presented.

The Linguistic Picture of the World
, 2021This book has been inspired by Walter Benjamin’s idea of an afterlife of an original in its translations and probes into a wide variety of extensions of Carroll’s story in six languages.

Is A Picture Worth A Thousand Words? Delving Into Spatial Reasoning for Vision Language Models
Neural Information Processing SystemsLarge language models (LLMs) and vision-language models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance across a wide range of tasks and domains. Despite this promise, spatial understanding and reasoning -- a fundamental component of human cognition ...

Superposition in picture languages
2005A word on alphabet π={u, r, d, l} can be thought of as a description of a connected picture drawn on a square grid: each letter is associated with a unit move of a pen, u coding a move up, r, d and l coding moves to the right, down and to the left. We define the notion of superposition of two pictures f and g as the set of pictures obtained when one ...

1997
In this chapter, we return to some of the more fundamental issues surrounding pictures. We draw on the terms we have developed to look back at the material we have studied. The goal is to shed more light on the relationship between pictures and language.

Some results on picture languages
Pattern Recognition, 1999Two different types of models called puzzle languages and recognizable picture languages describing digitized pictures in a two-dimensional plane have been introduced in the 1990s. We review here these models, reporting the main results already proved. We also give a few new results.

A compiled picture language on Macintosh
Proceedings of the 1986 ACM SIGSMALL/PC symposium on Small systems - SIGSMALL '86, 1986A visual programming language for Macintosh personal computer system is introduced. In this language both programs and data are pictures. Keyboardless programming is the main goal of the language design. The language is designed for novice users such as school children.

Transformer-Based Language-Person Search With Multiple Region Slicing
IEEE transactions on circuits and systems for video technology (Print), 2022Language-person search is an essential technique for applications like criminal searching, where it is more feasible for a witness to provide language descriptions of a suspect than providing a photo. Most existing works treat the language-person pair as
