The Language of Pictures

Abstract This chapter examines the Renaissance interest in hieroglyphics, and connects this interest to Philip Pullman’s creation of the dæmon. Knowledge of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, a writing system that had endured for millennia, was lost during the late Roman empire.

P Systems and Picture Languages

Array-rewriting P systems were introduced in [2] linking the two areas of membrane computing and picture grammars. Subsequently a variety of P systems with array objects and different kinds of rewriting has been introduced. Here we discuss a few prominent systems among these, point out their features and indicate possible problems for future study.

On some recognizable picture-languages

We show that the language of pictures over {a, b}, where all occurring b's are connected is recognizable, which solves an open problem in [Mat98]. We generalize the used construction to show that monocausal deterministically recognizable picture languages are recognizable, which is surprisingly nontrivial.
