Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Instrumentation and Axial Load Testing of Displacement Piles

open access: yes, 2013
Despite the fact that results of many instrumented pile load tests have been reported in the literature, it is difficult to find well-documented instrumentation procedures that can be used when planning a load testing programme.

An Experimental Investigation into Pile Group-Layered Soil Interaction

open access: yes, 1996
An interaction analysis of an axially loaded single pile and pile group with and without a pile cap in a layered soil medium has been investigated using the two-dimensional photoelastic method.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

MODELLING OF PILED RAFT FOUNDATIONS IN SAND

open access: yes, 2010
A piled raft is a composite foundation in which the piles are used as settlement reducers and they share, with the raft, the load from the superstructure.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Prediction of nonlinear vertical settlement of a pile group consisting of new and existing displacement piles in clay strata

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2019
Reusing existing displacement piles is economical, time-saving, and environment-friendly. This paper presents an analytical approach for predicting the load carrying behavior of pile groups consisting of new and existing displacement piles.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

A study on group efficiency of piles in sand

open access: yesTạp chí Khoa học Đại học Mở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh - Kỹ thuật và Công nghệ, 2016
Bearing capacity of pile group in cohesionless soil is an interesting topic with studies about coefficient of efficiency, about critical depth where skin friction seems constant with respect to depth of embedment/installation etc ...

Interaction Influences on Group-Pile Efficiency

open access: yes, 2014
