The ultrastructure of mammalian pinealocytes: A systematic investigation
Microscopy Research and Technique, 1992AbstractPinealocytes are not only the principal cellular components of the pineal gland, but they are also the principal synthetic machinery of this enigmatical gland with highly diverse and often questionable empyreal roles assigned to it. Ultrastructural descriptions of pinealocytes belonging to some 70 species of mammals (a mere 2% or less of the ...

Mammalian pinealocytes: ultrastructural aspects and innervation.
Ciba Foundation symposium, 1985In the mammalian pineal gland it is notoriously difficult to relate structure to function. The pineal-specific cells, the pinealocytes, contain only inconspicuous numbers of secretory granules, and the variable amounts of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum also do not point to a particular function.

Direct photosensitivity of chick pinealocytes as demonstrated by visinin immunoreactivity [PDF]
Visinin, a calcium-binding protein isolated from the soluble fraction of homogenized chick retinae, has been recognized immunocytochemically in the pinealocytes of various submammals. In the chick pineal organ, continuous environmental light induced an increase in population density of visinin-immunoreactive pinealocytes.

The ultrstructure of neuronal‐pinealocytic interconnections in the monkey pineal
Microscopy Research and Technique, 1992AbstractRecent ultrastructural studies of neuronal‐pinealocytic interconnections in the monkey pineal are reviewed. The pinealocytes in the adult monkey show almost all of the cytological specializations known in subprimate mammals. Adjacent pinealocytes are functionally coupled through ribbon synapses on cell bodies and gap junctions on cell bodies ...

The Ultrastructure of the Nerve Fibers and Pinealocytes in the Rat Pineal Stalk
Journal of Pineal Research, 1984In view of the increasing interest in the central innervation of the mammalian pineal gland, this aspect was studied in depth in the rat. This species is especially suited since the nerve fibers in question form a distinct bundle running from the deep to the superficial pineal gland through the pineal stalk.

Semiquantitative electron microscopic observations on pinealocytes of the Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) were made to compare the sizes of pinealocyte nuclei and pinealocytes as a whole, their nuclei and cytoplasm together, over a 24‐hr period, between young animals (60‐70 days old) and adult animals (120–130 days old) under LD 12: 12 and between

Chapter 39: Cytochemistry of CSF-contacting neurons and pinealocytes
1992Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)-immunoreactive neurons of the paraventricular organ of the bony fish Coregonus albus send dendrites into the third ventricle. Their axons run to the synaptic zone of the infundibular lobe. The dendrites may take up some chemical information from the third ventricle, while the axons communicate it to the neuropil of the ...

Stereologic Studies on Mitochondrial Configuration in the Rat Pinealocytes
Journal of Pineal Research, 1985Stereologic studies were performed on rat pinealocytes. In the morphometric analysis the following parameters were taken into consideration: the volume density of the outer and inner membranes, surface areas of the outer and inner membranes, inner membrane to outer membrane surface area ratio, volumes of the outer and inner compartments, and partition ...

Transformation of centrioles in pinealocytes of adult guinea pigs
Journal of Neurocytology, 1972Pinealocytes from adult guinea pigs contain conventional centrioles and microtubular sheaves composed of varying numbers of doublet and/or triplet tubules of indefinite length embedded in a dense matrix, which are assumed to be formed by elongation and dissociation of the centriolar wall.

Glutamate immunoreactivity is enriched over pinealocytes of the gerbil pineal gland
Cell & Tissue Research, 1994Mammalian pinealocytes have been shown to contain synaptic-like microvesicles with putative secretory functions. As a first step to elucidate the possibility that pinealocyte microvesicles store messenger molecules, such as neuroactive amino acids, we have studied the distributional pattern of glutamate immunoreactivity in the pineal gland of the ...
