Gap junctions between guinea-pig pinealocytes

Cell and Tissue Research, 1984
In accordance with previous results in rats, belt-like arrangements of fenestrated gap junctions have been found around the collicular segments of pineal cells in the guinea pig. In addition, macular interpinealocyte gap junctions have been observed in this species.

Influence of gonadotropic hormones on the ultrastructure of rat pinealocytes [PDF]

open access: possibleCell and Tissue Research, 1978
The influence of gonadotropic hormones on the ultrastructure of rat pinealocytes was studied. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) as well as pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) caused a marked activation of pinealocytes. It is characterised by a conspicuous proliferation of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus as well as an ...

Existence and function of opioid receptors on nammalian pinealocytes

Journal of Pineal Research, 1998
Abstract: Previous studies in our laboratories have identified a single population of opioid receptors in bovine pineal gland, which we have chosen to characterize further on pinealocytes isolated from the cow and rat pineal gland. The bovine pinealocytes isolated by trypsinization or mechanical manipulation revealed receptor density (Bmax) values of ...

The effects of testosterone on the mice pinealocytes: a quantitative study

Tissue and Cell, 1999
In order to determine the effects of testosterone upon the function of the pineal gland we quantitated, under the electron microscope, the number of dense-core vesicles, lysosomes, lipid droplets and the fractional volume of the pineal gland components in adult male mice.

Tubular lysosomes in rat and gerbil pinealocytes

Histochemistry, 1988
Ultracytochemical demonstration of acid phosphatase (AcPase) in pinealocytes of rat and Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) has revealed an existence of tubular lysosomes (30-200 nm in diameter and more than 5 micron long) in their cytoplasm.

Localization of N- ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein in pinealocytes

NeuroReport, 1995
N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein (NSF), a protein necessary for vesicular docking and/or fusion, was detected immunohistochemically in pinealocytes. NSF was distributed similarly to synaptophysin and vacuolar-type H(+)-ATPase (V-ATPase), marker proteins for synaptic-like microvesicles (MVs) abundantly present in pinealocytes.

Synaptic-like Microvesicles in Mammalian Pinealocytes

1999
The recent deciphering of the protein composition of the synaptic vesicle membrane has led to the unexpected identification of a compartment of electron-lucent microvesicles in neuroendocrine cells which resemble neuronal synaptic vesicles in terms of molecular structure and function.

Ultrastructural Studies on the Pinealocyte Mitochondria During the Daytime and at Night

Journal of Pineal Research, 1985
Rat pinealocytes were found to contain mitochondria in three configurational states and they were calculated during their maximum (11:00) and minimum (23:00) serotonin content under various conditions of lighting (LD 12:12 and D 24). Their proportions were found to change in the circadian rhythm.

Noradrenergic and VIPergic Signal Transduction in Rat Pinealocytes

1997
In the present study we investigated the effects of norepinephrine and vasoactive intestinal peptide on the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and on phosphorylation of the transcription factor CREB in isolated rat pinealocytes. Norepinephrine evoked a biphasic calcium response via activation of α1-adrenergic receptors in virtually all ...

Evidence for a role of calmodulin in regulation of pinealocyte cyclic nucleotides

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1991
In rat pinealocytes, norepinephrine (NE) increases cAMP and cGMP accumulation through a synergistic dual receptor mechanism involving alpha 1- and beta-adrenergic receptors. The available evidence indicates that both increases in intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i, and activation of protein kinase C are involved in the alpha 1-adrenergic potentiation of beta ...
