d-Aspartate modulates melatonin synthesis in rat pinealocytes

Neuroscience Letters, 1998
It has been known that pinealocytes contain the highest level of D-aspartate among various neuroendocrine cells in the rat. Here, we report that exogenous D-aspartate strongly inhibited norepinephrine-dependent melatonin synthesis in the rat pineal gland, the concentration required for 50% inhibition being 75 microM.

Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors Enhance cGMP Production in Rat Pinealocytes

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1995
The role of tyrosine kinase(s) in the regulation of cGMP accumulation in rat pinealocytes was investigated using three tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Treatment with genistein, erbstatin or the active analogues of tyrphostin selectively increased basal cGMP accumulation in a dose-dependent manner without a concomitant increase in cAMP.

Ultrastructure of pinealocytes of the kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordi)

Cell and Tissue Research, 1982
The ultrastructure of the pinealocytes of the wild-captured ord kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordi) was examined. A homogeneous population of pinealocytes was present in the pineal gland of the kangaroo rat. The Golgi apparatus, granular endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lysosomes, dense-core vesicles, vacuoles containing a flocculent material and lipid ...

Tubular lysosomes in rat and gerbil pinealocytes

Histochemistry, 1988
Ultracytochemical demonstration of acid phosphatase (AcPase) in pinealocytes of rat and Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) has revealed an existence of tubular lysosomes (30-200 nm in diameter and more than 5 micron long) in their cytoplasm.

Ultrastructure of pinealocytes of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus

Cell and Tissue Research, 1979
Fine structural features of pinealocytes of cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) were examined. Golgi complexes, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and polysomes are usual organelles seen in the perikaryonal cytoplasm of pinealocytes. Many non-granulated vesicles (40 to 80 nm in diameter) and a few granulated vesicles (about 100 nm in diameter) are ...

Synaptic-like Microvesicles in Mammalian Pinealocytes

1999
The recent deciphering of the protein composition of the synaptic vesicle membrane has led to the unexpected identification of a compartment of electron-lucent microvesicles in neuroendocrine cells which resemble neuronal synaptic vesicles in terms of molecular structure and function.

Peptidergic Modulation of Serotonin Release from Cultured Rat Pinealocytes

Journal of Neuroendocrinology, 1997
This paper describes the effects of β‐adrenergic and peptidergic inputs on serotonin (5‐HT) synthesis, outflow and metabolism into melatonin in cultured dissociated rat pinealocytes. The spontaneous outflow of 5‐HT from pinealocytes was high as demonstrated by the elevated levels of extracellular 5‐HT accumulated in the medium (about 5 ng/h/70,000 ...

Existence and function of opioid receptors on nammalian pinealocytes

Journal of Pineal Research, 1998
Abstract: Previous studies in our laboratories have identified a single population of opioid receptors in bovine pineal gland, which we have chosen to characterize further on pinealocytes isolated from the cow and rat pineal gland. The bovine pinealocytes isolated by trypsinization or mechanical manipulation revealed receptor density (Bmax) values of ...

Ethanol Reduces Norepinephrine‐Stimulated Melatonin Synthesis in Rat Pinealocytes

Journal of Neurochemistry, 1992
Abstract: In this study, the in vitro effects of ethanol on norepinephrine‐stimulated cyclic AMP (cAMP), N‐acetyltransferase (NAT), and melatonin (MT) production were examined in dispersed rat pinealocytes. Cellular cAMP content was determined 15 min after treatment; whereas NAT activity and MT release in the medium were determined 4.5 h after ...

The ultrastructure of mammalian pinealocytes: A systematic investigation

Microscopy Research and Technique, 1992
AbstractPinealocytes are not only the principal cellular components of the pineal gland, but they are also the principal synthetic machinery of this enigmatical gland with highly diverse and often questionable empyreal roles assigned to it. Ultrastructural descriptions of pinealocytes belonging to some 70 species of mammals (a mere 2% or less of the ...
