The Ultrastructure of the Nerve Fibers and Pinealocytes in the Rat Pineal Stalk

Journal of Pineal Research, 1984
In view of the increasing interest in the central innervation of the mammalian pineal gland, this aspect was studied in depth in the rat. This species is especially suited since the nerve fibers in question form a distinct bundle running from the deep to the superficial pineal gland through the pineal stalk.

Chapter 39: Cytochemistry of CSF-contacting neurons and pinealocytes

1992
Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)-immunoreactive neurons of the paraventricular organ of the bony fish Coregonus albus send dendrites into the third ventricle. Their axons run to the synaptic zone of the infundibular lobe. The dendrites may take up some chemical information from the third ventricle, while the axons communicate it to the neuropil of the ...

Glutamate immunoreactivity is enriched over pinealocytes of the gerbil pineal gland

Cell & Tissue Research, 1994
Mammalian pinealocytes have been shown to contain synaptic-like microvesicles with putative secretory functions. As a first step to elucidate the possibility that pinealocyte microvesicles store messenger molecules, such as neuroactive amino acids, we have studied the distributional pattern of glutamate immunoreactivity in the pineal gland of the ...

Stereologic Studies on Mitochondrial Configuration in the Rat Pinealocytes

Journal of Pineal Research, 1985
Stereologic studies were performed on rat pinealocytes. In the morphometric analysis the following parameters were taken into consideration: the volume density of the outer and inner membranes, surface areas of the outer and inner membranes, inner membrane to outer membrane surface area ratio, volumes of the outer and inner compartments, and partition ...

Transformation of centrioles in pinealocytes of adult guinea pigs

Journal of Neurocytology, 1972
Pinealocytes from adult guinea pigs contain conventional centrioles and microtubular sheaves composed of varying numbers of doublet and/or triplet tubules of indefinite length embedded in a dense matrix, which are assumed to be formed by elongation and dissociation of the centriolar wall.

Noradrenergic and VIPergic Signal Transduction in Rat Pinealocytes

1997
In the present study we investigated the effects of norepinephrine and vasoactive intestinal peptide on the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and on phosphorylation of the transcription factor CREB in isolated rat pinealocytes. Norepinephrine evoked a biphasic calcium response via activation of α1-adrenergic receptors in virtually all ...

Effects of estradiol benzoate on the ultrastructure of the pinealocyte in the ovariectomized rat.

Neuro endocrinology letters, 2002
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of ovariectomy and ovariectomy followed by estradiol benzoate administration on the ultrastructure of pinealocytes in female rat.For this purpose 15 female Wistar rats were used. Animals were divided into three groups.

On the presence of different populations of pinealocytes in the mammalian pineal gland

Journal of Neural Transmission, 1977
The different categories of cells described by many authors in the pineal gland of mammals have been critically considered. In some mammalian species, two different populations of pinealocytes have been observed. To each of these populations a specific secretory process can be attributed.
