Piranha solution treatment: A facile method for improving the antithrombotic ability and regulating smooth muscle cell growth on blood contact materials [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2023
Blood contact materials require strong anti-fouling capabilities to avoid thrombus formation. Recently, TiO2-based photocatalytic antithrombotic treatment has gained focus. Nevertheless, this method is restricted to titanium materials with photocatalytic

Surface Bioactivation of Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) by Sulfuric Acid and Piranha Solution: Influence of the Modification Route in Capacity for Inducing Cell Growth [PDF]

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2021
The aim of this study was to promote bioactivity of the PEEK surface using sulfuric acid and piranha solution. PEEK was functionalized by a sulfuric acid treatment for 90 s and by piranha solution for 60 and 90 s.

Use of Piranha Solution as An Alternative Route to Promote Bioactivation of PEEK Surface with Low Functionalization Times [PDF]

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
This study aimed to achieve bioactivity on the PEEK surface using piranha solution through a lower functionalization time. For this purpose, the functionalization occurred with piranha solution and 98% sulfuric acid in the proportions of 1:2, 1:1, and 2 ...

Biomass Waste Carbonization in Piranha Solution: A Route to Hypergolic Carbons? [PDF]

open access: yesMicro, 2022
In the present work we report for the first time the carbonization of biomass waste, such as stale bread and spent coffee, in piranha solution (H2SO4-H2O2) at ambient conditions. Carbonization is fast and exothermic, resulting in the formation of carbon nanosheets at decent yields of 25–35%, depending on the starting material.

Evaluation of High-Performance Polyether Ether Ketone Polymer Treated with Piranha Solution and Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate Coating. [PDF]

open access: yesBiomed Res Int
Background. Dental implantation has become a standard procedure with high success rates, relying on achieving osseointegration between the implant surface and surrounding bone tissue. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a promising alternative to traditional dental implant materials like titanium, but its osseointegration capabilities are limited due to ...

The recovery of sulfuric acid from spent piranha solution over a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) Ti-RuO2 electrode

open access: yesJournal of Hazardous Materials, 2021
Piranha solution is a highly acidic mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The present study aimed at developing a dimensionally stable anode (DSA), made of titanium metal foil coated with Ruthenium Dioxide (RuO2), for the electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of strong sulfuric acid under ambient conditions.
