Pituitary control of pigmentation has been known for more than 60 years. Since 1969, β-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (β-MSH) has been accepted as the main pituitary pigmentary hormone in man. Its "constant companionship" with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has also been repeatedly demonstrated.

The human anterior pituitary gland contains at least five distinct hormone-producing cell populations, expressing six different hormones (Table 1): pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH).

Endocrinology, 1931
As our knowledge of endocrine glands increases it becomes more and more evident that the number of active principles is very much greater than had formerly been supposed. The separation of two hormones from the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland (1) stimulated speculation along this line but we must not allow ourselves to jump at the conclusion that

PITUITARY ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1950To the Editor:— An aspect of pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) therapy which seems to have escaped attention is the relationship of the pituitary adrenal axis to fat metabolism and to fatty infiltration of the liver. There is a considerable amount of evidence at hand to indicate that the pituitary adrenal axis is involved in fat metabolism ...
