Surgical management of pituitary adenomas continues to be a safe and effective method for treating many patients with these lesions. The goal of overall management should be to provide the patient with the most effective means of long-term control of this benign but potentially disabling disease. Currently, surgery has a significant role.

Pituitary, 2008
Pituitary surgery is a continuous evolving speciality of the neurosurgeons' armamentarium, which requires precise anatomical knowledge, technical skills and integrated appreciation of the pituitary pathophysiology. What we consider "pure" endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery is a procedure performed through the nose and the sphenoid bone, with the ...

Endoscopic pituitary surgery has definite advantages over the traditional method using the operating microscope. Improved visualization, angled view, and a wider panoramic perspective of the important anatomic relationships of the sphenoid and the sella turcica were the obvious advantages.

Anaesthesia for pituitary surgery
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2006The anaesthetic care of patients undergoing pituitary surgery involves an understanding of the varied presentations of pituitary disease and their implications for the patient's perioperative condition and management. The neuroanaesthetist must also have an appreciation of the issues relevant to the surgical approach (either transsphenoidal or, less ...

An effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was the disruption of healthcare systems, especially surgical services provided to the community. Pituitary surgery was especially impacted, given the majority of cases were deemed non-urgent with very few exceptions, and the high risk of viral transmission conferred by the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal ...

Endoscopy has been adopted for transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. A rigid rod-lens endoscope, 4-mm in diameter and 18 cm in length, is used in replacement of the operating microscope. This endoscopic technique utilizes the patient's natural nasal air passage as a surgical corridor without a sublabial or nasal mucosal incision.
