Single‐cell and spatial transcriptomics: Discovery of human placental development and disease

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances
The human placenta is a vital organ, encompassing many distinct cell types, that maintains the growth and development of the fetus and is essential for substance exchange, defense, synthesis, and immunity.

Placenta: an old organ with new functions

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
The transition from oviparity to viviparity and the establishment of feto-maternal communications introduced the placenta as the major anatomical site to provide nutrients, gases, and hormones to the developing fetus. The placenta has endocrine functions,

The calcium-sensing receptor as a regulator of cellular fate in normal and pathological conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) belongs to the evolutionarily conserved family of plasma membrane G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Early studies identified an essential role for the CaSR in systemic calcium homeostasis through its ability to ...

Organ‐Specific and Conserved Regulatory Logic Orchestrates Gene Expression in the Embryonic Mesothelium

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Integrated multi‐omic profiling maps the gene‐regulatory landscape of the coelomic mesothelium across heart, lung, and pancreas. A cardiac‐restricted regulatory program is uncovered in which TBX20 activates heart mesothelial (epicardial) cis‐regulatory elements, while MAF emerges as a conserved regulator of mesothelial identity.

Updates on placental studies in bitches [PDF]

open access: yesCiência Rural
: The placenta, despite being a temporary organ, is essential for the development and survival of the conceptus. During pregnancy, it performs essential functions, such as nutrition, protection, circulation, excretion, and secretion.

Environmental contaminants exposure and preterm birth: a systematic review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Preterm birth is an obstetric condition associated with a high risk of infant mortality and morbidities in both the neonatal period and later in life, which has also a significant public health impact because it carries an important societal economic ...

Macrophage Extracellular Traps in Immunity and Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a macrophage‐mediated innate defense mechanism, the dysregulated release of METs drives chronic inflammation and influences tumor progression. Furthermore, METs exhibit a functional duality within the tumor microenvironment, capable of both promoting and suppressing tumor development.

Oil‐Coated Nanoplastics Induce Rapid Membrane Disruption and Severe Intestinal Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Oil‐rich food contact dramatically amplifies MNP release from plastic takeout containers, producing oil‐coated nanoplastics with altered surface properties and rapid membrane‐disruptive effects. These particles cause severe intestinal barrier damage and immune dysfunction in mice, and risk modeling suggests that long‐term gastrointestinal burdens may ...

Giant chorioangioma of the complicated placenta with retroplacental hematoma. Presentation of a patient

open access: yesActa Médica del Centro, 2016
The abnormal proliferation of vessels derived from the placenta is known as chorioangioma, although it is the most common placental benign tumor not trophoblastic of the placenta occurs in a frequency as low as 1% of pregnancies.

Engineering Approaches to Modify Immunomodulatory Functions of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs): Tissue Regeneration and Clinical Application

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) show promise for treating immune‐related disorders through immunomodulation and tissue regeneration. This review gives a brief overview of current clinical approval of MSC therapies. It also discussed how bioengineering, including genetic modification, biomaterial delivery, extracellular vesicles, and iPSC‐derived MSCs,
