Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Numerical modelling of Ti6Al4V(ELI) hierarchical honeycomb structures of order one at the vertices

open access: yesResults in Engineering
Lattice structures are used in engineering industries because of their good mechanical properties, including high stiffness, high strength, as well as specific energy absorption and fracture toughness.

Analysis of residual stress around a Berkovich nano-indentation by micro-Raman spectroscopy

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2019
Nano-indentation is a destructive measurement that introduces non-uniform residual stress around each nano-indentation. Herein, the residual stress distribution around a Berkovich nano-indentation on (001)- and (111)-plane silicon was studied by micro ...

Study on Shear Slip Characteristics of Sandstone Plane Joints under Normal Dynamic Load Disturbance [PDF]

open access: yesLithosphere
Rock joints are susceptible to slip instability due to dynamic load disturbances such as blasting, earthquakes, and fracturation. A series of direct shear tests under the dynamic load were conducted on sandstone plane joints using the RDS-200xl. The work

Direct formulation of a 4-node hybrid shell element with rotational degrees of freedom [PDF]

open access: yes
A simple 4-node assumed-stress hybrid quadrilateral shell element with rotational or drilling degrees of freedom is formulated. The element formulation is based directly on a 4-node element.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Behaviour of a sandy silt gold tailings under drained simple shear loading in a torsional shear hollow cylinder apparatus

open access: yesSoils and Foundations
Experimental results are presented in this technical paper to investigate the mechanisms of plane strain consolidation and drained shearing typical of below slope conditions.

The crack problem for a half plane stiffened by elastic cover plates [PDF]

open access: yes
An elastic half plane containing a crack and stiffened by a cover plate is discussed. The asymptotic nature of the stress state in the half plane around an end point of the stiffener to determine the likely orientation of a possible fracture initiation ...
