Adaptive Foam 3D Printing of Ultralight and Multifunctional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Adaptive foam 3D printing, enabled by expandable microspheres, imparts cellular structures to thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, manufactured through a variety of processes including fused filament fabrication, direct ink writing, digital light processing, and inkjet printing.

Navigating novel resources: A field test of the effects of small mammal personality on dispersal of Quercus seeds

open access: yesEcosphere
Climate change is shifting the habitable ranges of hundreds of species, and a greater understanding of the mechanisms driving migration velocity may make the difference between extinction and persistence for at‐risk species. However, predicting migration

Fabrication Routes for Ionic Conducting Fiber Strain Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conducting fiber strain sensors (ICFSs) offer compliant, textile‐integrable sensing. Thus far, the commercialization of ICFSs has been constrained by fiber fabrication routes. This review provides a fabrication‐centric analysis of ICFSs correlating processing strategies with material properties and scalability.

The Evolutionary Ecology of Mutualism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Mutualism, cooperation between different species, is wide-spread in nature. From bees pollinating plants to bacteria aiding digestion in the human gut: mutualism is essential for life on earth. But how does mutualism evolve?

A Novel Approach to Estimate the Transition Temperature via Dynamic Nanoindentation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A new dynamic nanoindentation‐based method was developed that uses the stiffness ratio as an indicator of the elastic–plastic deformation contributions at different temperatures. The approach successfully identified transition temperatures in ferritic steel and distinguished them from continuously ductile austenitic steel.

Plant secondary metabolites in animal feeds

open access: yes, 2011
Animal feeds contain a wide range toxins arising from anthropogenic and natural sources. In this chapter, the distribution of plant toxins in animal feeds and forages is reviewed.

Data from: An ant–plant mutualism through the lens of cGMP-dependent kinase genes

open access: yes, 2017
In plant–animal mutualisms, how an animal forages often determines how much benefit its plant partner receives. In many animals, foraging behaviour changes in response to foraging gene expression or activation of the cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG ...

Stretching the Printability Metric in Direct‐Ink Writing with Highly Extensible Yield‐Stress Fluids

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces “drawability” as a new metric for assessing printability in direct‐ink writing, focusing on gap‐spanning performance and speed robustness. By designing yield‐stress fluids with high extensibility, we demonstrate that extensional strain‐to‐break significantly enhances printability.

Quantifying Subsurface Weak in‐Plane Magnetization of Mixed Phase BiFeO3 by Scanning Nitrogen Vacancy Magnetometry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We use scanning nitrogen vacancy magnetometry to directly image the weak in‐plane magnetic moments in mixed phase BiFeO3 at the nanoscale and quantify the local magnetic moments to be 18.8±2.0 μB/nm2 in the rhombohedral‐like phase and 1.5±0.6 μB/nm2 in the well‐known non‐magnetic tetragonal‐like phase.
