Mimicking water striders’ legs superhydrophobicity and buoyancy with cabbage leaves and nanotube carpets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this work, we have studied the superhydrophobicity and buoyancy of two types of nanostructured surfaces: the cabbage leaf and a vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) carpet. The wettability of these surfaces were characterized by contact angle,

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Motion behavior of a charged droplet impacting on hydrophilic and hydrophobic leaf surfaces

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Engineering
The impact behavior of charged droplets on leaf surfaces with varying degrees of hydrophobicity was experimentally investigated. A high-speed camera was employed to quantitatively capture the impact morphology and motion dynamics of the droplets under ...

A Bacterial Glucanotransferase Can Replace the Complex Maltose Metabolism Required for Starch to Sucrose Conversion in Leaves at Night [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Controlled conversion of leaf starch to sucrose at night is essential for the normal growth of Arabidopsis. The conversion involves the cytosolic metabolism of maltose to hexose phosphates via an unusual, multidomain protein with 4-glucanotransferase ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Metabolomic Profile of Vaccinium corymbosum Leaves: Exploiting Diversity Among Ten Different Cultivars

open access: yesFoods
Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) leaves are often discarded as agricultural by-products despite their potential abundance in bioactive compounds. However, comprehensive knowledge of their phytochemical profile remains limited, especially at the cultivar ...

Incident light orientation lets C4 monocotyledonous leaves make light work differently

open access: yes, 2008
Photosynthesis is an important driver of ecosystem sustainability in the face of climate change. Monocotyledonous crop species with C4 photosynthesis such as maize (Zea mays L; corn) and sugar cane are crucial for future food security and biofuel crop ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Correlation and path analysis studies in okra

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Plant Breeding, 2017
Thirty genotypes belonging to okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) were utilized, to work out the correlation and path coefficient. The genotypic and phenotypic correlation indicated that yield per plant was significantly associated with plant height, number of

The growth of sun and shade leaves of Populus euramericana "robusta" in relation to age, light intensity and temperature

open access: yes, 1974
The growth and development of sun and shade leaves was investigated in Populus euramericana 'Robusta', growing under various light intensities and temperatures and on a substrate optimal for the roots.Strong correlations exist between the dimensions of ...
