Functional analysis of all succinate dehydrogenase subunits in Fusarium fujikuroi

open access: yesPhytopathology Research
Fusarium fujikuroi, the causal agent of rice bakanae disease (RBD), contains five succinate dehydrogenase (Sdh) subunits: FfSdhA, FfSdhB, FfSdhC1, FfSdhC2, and FfSdhD.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Disease control by sulphur induced resistance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
As early as the 19th century, Justus von Liebig (1803 – 1873) identified the lack of vitality of soils and non-existent vigour of plants as relevant causes of increased infections of crops by fungal diseases.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

The hidden life of Xylella: mining the NCBI Sequence Read Archive reveals potential new species, host plants, and infected areas for this elusive bacterial plant pathogen

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology
New crop disease outbreaks can occur when phytopathogenic bacterial pathogens acquire new traits, switch to a new host plant, or are introduced into new geographic areas.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...
