[Presence of plant sterols in the diet and the hypocholesterolemic effects of plant sterols].

open access: yesTidsskrift for den Norske laegeforening : tidsskrift for praktisk medicin, ny raekke, 2000
A high intake of fat, and in particular saturated fat, is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Reduced intake of spreads had therefore generally been recommended. A special type of "heart-friendly" margarine, a plant sterol enriched margarine, has been a commercial success since it was introduced in 1995.

Nutritional, Functional, and Anti‐Hypercholesterolemic Properties of Sourdough Breads From Unripe Plantain, Tiger Nut, and Fenugreek Flours

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
Composite sourdough breads were developed from blends of unripe plantain, tiger nut, and fenugreek flours. Optimized formulations improved pasting stability and enhanced texture, producing softer more elastic crumbs. The enriched breads contained higher dietary fiber and bioactive compounds, and significantly reduced serum cholesterol markers ...

An improved gas-liquid chromatographic method for the determination of fecal neutral sterols

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1983
The analysis of fecal neutral sterols has been improved by use of a highly selective gas-liquid chromatography column packed with SP-2401. This chromatographic column allows separation of cholesterol and cholestanol and delta 5-5 alpha plant sterol ...

Food‐grade proteins, lipids, and fibers as potential tools to ameliorate cardiovascular disorders: A review

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
Abstract Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of global mortality, necessitating effective preventive and adjunct therapeutic strategies beyond conventional pharmacological interventions. Although previous reviews have focused on individual nutrients or dietary patterns, this review provides a mechanism‐based, integrative perspective

Effects of diet and metamorphosis upon the sterol composition of the butterfly Morpho peleides

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2006
Whole body sterol metabolism in insects has seldom been studied. We were able to design an appropriate study at a butterfly farm in Belize. We collected six larvas of butterfly (Morpho peleides), their food (leaves of Pterocarpus bayessii), and their ...

Optimization of Ultrasound‐Assisted Extraction of Seabuckthorn (Hippophae salicifolia) Seed Oil With the Use of Response Surface Methodology

open access: yesFuture Postharvest and Food, EarlyView.
Ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) of seabuckthorn seed oil enhanced yield (17.95%), antioxidant activity (IC50: 5.25 μg/mL), and carotenoid content (266.63 mg/100 g). The oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids (83.15%), exhibited superior quality, thermal stability, and potential applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, making UAE a ...

A sterol panel for rare lipid disorders: sitosterolemia, cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research
Disease-specific sterols accumulate in the blood of patients with several rare lipid disorders. Biochemical measurement of these sterols is important for correct diagnosis and sometimes monitoring of treatment.

Genomic Influence in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases with a Sterol-Based Treatment

open access: yesDiseases, 2018
Raised serum cholesterol concentration is a well-established risk factor in cardiovascular disease. In addition, genetic load may have an indirect influence on cardiovascular risk.

Aloe vera in Food Preservation: Harnessing Bioactive Constituents for Clean‐Label Innovation and Safety Assurance

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Aloe vera‐derived biopolymers and nanoformulations enhance antimicrobial, antioxidant, and barrier functions in clean‐label edible coatings and films, whereas safety‐critical anthraquinone thresholds and regulatory constraints shape their translational potential.
