On the Presumed Sterile Induction of Plant Tumors
Science, 1960A cooperative reinvestigation of the possibility that filtrates of crown-gall bacterial cultures can induce autonomous tumors in plants has been conducted. The results indicate that the neoplasms formed after treatment do not fulfill the criteria for crown gall since they are not autonomous.

These include crown gall and hairy root disease caused by bacterial plasmids (30, 37, 75), Black’s wound tumor disease caused by a double-stranded RNA-virus (12), and Kostoff genetic tumors that arise in certain interspecific hybrids (65).

DNA synthesis in plant tumor cells
Experimental Cell Research, 1964Abstract Incorporation of 3 H-thymidine was used to compare patterns of DNA synthesis in normal root meristems and in stem tissues of bean during crown-gall tumor formation. There was no evidence of differential activation of DNA synthesis to distinguish normal wound response at 2 days after treatment from tumor cell transformation.

Reversal of Plant Tumor Formation
1983The transformation of plant tissues by the soil bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Agrobacterium rhizogenes results in tumor formation or a callus with excessive root formation, respectively. These processes are associated with the incorporation of bacterial plasmid DNA (T-DNA), into the genome of the host plant.
