Experimental Assessment of the Effects of Substrate Choice on the Duration of Chemical Signals in Fecal Scent‐Marks of Free‐Ranging Iberian Wolves

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chemical communication, typically based on feces, urine, and glandular secretions, often deposited as substrate scent marks, plays a key role in social organization and communication among many mammals, especially carnivores. This study assesses experimentally whether the type of substrate chosen for fecal deposition and the temperature ...

Evapotranspiration Profiles and Trends in Seasonally Dry and Seasonally Humid Tropical Forests

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Moisture availability and vegetation are decisive factors in ET variations, which are greater in the Atlantic Forest. Precipitation contributes positively to ET variations (r = 0.20–0.67). Significant trends (p < 0.05) in ET were identified, with opposing patterns.

PRGPred: A platform for prediction of domains of resistance gene analogue (RGA) in Arecaceae developed using machine learning algorithms [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of BioScience and Biotechnology, 2015
Plant disease resistance genes (R-genes) are responsible for initiation of defense mechanism against various phytopathogens. The majority of plant R-genes are members of very large multi-gene families, which encode structurally related proteins ...

Bioavailability of soil organic carbon and Fe as influenced by forestry practices in a subtropical coastal catchment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Potential impacts of plantation forestry practices on soil organic carbon and Fe available to microorganisms were investigated in a subtropical coastal catchment. The impacts of harvesting or replanting were largely limited to the soil top layer (0–10 cm

Perennial Legumes Pueraria phaseoloides and Leucaena leucocephala Exhibit High Potential for Fertility Restoration of Degraded Mined Soils in Ghana

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
Revegetating the subsoil layer of abandoned gold mined sites with the perennial legumes Leucaena Leucocephala, Pueraria phaseoloides and Gliricidia sepium without any soil amendments increases the content of soil organic carbon and important macro‐nutrients, which are crucial for restoring soil health and productivity. These improvements in soil health

The Coding Regions of Germline mRNAs Confer Sensitivity to Argonaute Regulation in C. elegans

open access: yesCell Reports, 2018
Summary: Protein-coding genes undergo a wide array of regulatory interactions with factors that engage non-coding regions. Open reading frames (ORFs), in contrast, are thought to be constrained by coding function, precluding a major role in gene ...
