RADIATION DOSE TO THE SURGEON DURING PLAQUE BRACHYTHERAPY
Retina, 2012To evaluate the radiation dose to a surgeon's hands during I eye plaque procedures.Sixteen consecutive patients with uveal melanomas were scheduled for eye plaque brachytherapy. The same surgeon wore thermoluminescent dosimeters on the dominant index finger and thumb while placing and removing the eye plaque to measure radiation dose.

Optimization of 125I Ophthalmic Plaque Brachytherapy
Medical Dosimetry, 1990Episcleral plaques containing 125I sources are often used in the treatment of ocular melanoma. Within four years post‐treatment, however, the majority of patients experience some visual loss due to radiation retinopathy. The high incidence of late complications suggests that careful treatment optimization may lead to improved outcome.

Ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy for thick posterior uveal melanomas
British Journal of Ophthalmology, 2009Ruthenium-106 brachytherapy is an effective method for treating small to medium uveal melanomas. The purpose of this study was to examine its effectiveness and safety in the management of thick posterior uveal melanoma (apical height >/=8.0 mm) and to compare it with enucleation.126 consecutive patients with thick uveal melanoma were included.

Surgical management of strabismus following choroidal melanoma plaque brachytherapy
Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, 2017To characterize intraoperative findings, surgical approach, and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing strabismus surgery following plaque brachytherapy for ocular melanoma. The records of all patients who underwent plaque brachytherapy for choroidal melanoma between May 2007 and June 2016 were reviewed retrospectively to identify those who ...

Plaque Brachytherapy for Uveal Melanoma: A Vision Prognostication Model
International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, 2012To generate a vision prognostication model after plaque brachytherapy for uveal melanoma. All patients with primary single ciliary body or choroidal melanoma treated with iodine-125 or ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy between January 1, 2005, and June 30, 2010, were included. The primary endpoint was loss of visual acuity.

Plaque Brachytherapy in the Treatment of Retinoblastoma
1993“It was not until 1929 that Foster Moore, whom I was privileged to assist, became the first to succeed in destroying retinoblastoma and conserve the eye by the interstitial insertion of a radon seed through a puncture in the sclera exactly over the centre of the base of the neoplasm.” With these words, given at the 1962 Doyne Memorial Lecture reviewing

Quantification of dose perturbation by plaque in vascular brachytherapy
European Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2005AbstractBackground Dose prescription and reporting in vascular brachytherapy (VBT) is based on the assumption that the vessel wall is water equivalent, which does not consider a possible dose perturbation by plaque. As the extent of this perturbation is unknown, we aimed to quantify dose attenuation by atherosclerotic plaque for beta‐ and gamma ...

The treatment of choroidal melanoma with 198Au plaque brachytherapy
Radiotherapy and Oncology, 2001Seventy-nine consecutive patients with primary choroidal melanoma were treated with 198 Au plaque brachytherapy at the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA) between 1992 and 1998 with perioperative ultrasound to confirm plaque placement. Seventy-seven of the 79 patients were analyzable for this study.Five year actuarial disease specific survival ...

The use of ruthenium plaque brachytherapy in retinoblastoma
Acta Ophthalmologica, 2009Abstract Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of 106Ru plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of retinoblastoma. Methods We reviewed a retrospective, noncomparative case series of 39 children with retinoblastoma treated with 106Ru plaques at the Jules‐Gonin Eye Hospital between October 1992 and July 2006, with 12 months of follow‐up.
