Porosity in plasma electrolytic oxide coatings
Acta Materialia, 2006Abstract Plasma electrolytic oxide coatings are generally assumed to be almost fully dense. However, evidence is presented here for the presence of sub-micrometre, surface-connected porosity in such coatings, on aluminium alloys, at levels of the order of 20%.

Corrosion Science, 2009Abstract The influence of an anodizing pre-treatment in sulphuric acid is investigated on plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of aluminium in silicate electrolyte under constant rms current. The presence of the anodic film is shown to promote the establishment of a micro-arc regime that is favourable for growth of the PEO coating.
