The instability of inhomogeneous plasma streams

Plasma Physics, 1972
The instability of plane‐parallel plasma streams with a nonuniform velocity profile, both in the absence and in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field, has been investigated. The results for plasma streams are compared with those of ideal conductive liquid flows.

Jeans instability of a dusty plasma

Physical Review E, 1994
We study the linear and the nonlinear stages of the Jeans instability of charged grains with mass ${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{d}}$ and charge ${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{d}}$ in the regime ${\mathit{Gm}}_{\mathit{d}}^{2}$/${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{d}}^{2}$\ensuremath{\approxeq}O(1).

Instability of a strongly inhomogeneous plasma

Physical Review A, 1990
The stability of a plasma boundary in the presence of a powerful p-polarized electromagnetic wave is studied. It is shown that surface waves that are coupled to plasmons localized in the plasma-vacuum transition layer can be excited. The growth rate that is calculated turns out to be larger than the corresponding value obtained without taking nonlocal ...

Instability of the sheath-plasma resonance

Physical Review Letters, 1988
An electrode with a positive dc bias inserted into a Maxwellian plasma is observed to generate coherent high-frequency oscillations at the sheath-plasma antiresonance frequency (..omega..approx.

Instability of the Ionospheric Plasma: Modeling and Analysis

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 2005
This paper is concerned with the theory and modeling of plasma instabilities in the ionosphere. We first consider the so-called striation model, which consists of balance equations for the density and momenta of the plasma species, coupled with an elliptic equation for the potential. The linearized instability of this model is analyzed in the framework

Plasma-maser instability in dusty plasmas

Physics Letters A, 1993
Abstract The growth rates of the Langmuir and electromagnetic radiation due to the plasma-maser instability in multicomponent unmagnetized plasmas with stationary charged particulates are obtained. The up-conversion of the wave energy from ion-acoustic oscillations to the test Langmuir and electromagnetic waves is much enhanced owing to the enhanced ...

Plasma instabilities in plasma thrusters

ICOPS 2000. IEEE Conference Record - Abstracts. 27th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (Cat. No.00CH37087), 2002
Summary form only given, as follows. The nature and effects of plasma oscillations and instabilities in plasma thrusters will be reviewed in the context of the Hall thruster and the magnetoplasmadynamic thruster (MPDT). We will review the relevant experimental data and related analytical and numerical work.

Cyclotron instability of the plasma in 'Ogra'

Journal of Nuclear Energy. Part C. Plasma Physics, Accelerators, Thermonuclear Research, 1963
Studies of the oscillations in a homogeneous plasma indicated that the stability of the system is increased by lowering the pressure. This problem was further investigated by examining the cyclotron instability of a homogeneous anisotropic plasma in large electric fields in the Ogra. Cyclotron frequencies of the molecular and atomal ions were used.

Beam-plasma instability in an inhomogeneous plasma

The Physics of Fluids, 1974
Unstable waves (ω > ωce) are observed to be localized in the axial gradient of a beam-produced plasma. This results from an increase of phase velocity due to the gradient, which permits Landau damping by the beam.
