Instabilities in Parametric Oscillations of a Plasma

The Physics of Fluids, 1968
Dispersion relations for longitudinal and transverse waves propagated perpendicularly to an externally applied high-frequency electric field in a fully ionized plasma has been obtained. It has been shown that in addition to ω ∼ ω0 (ω0 is the characteristic electron frequency), the longitudinal mode may be excited with frequencies ω ≃ Ωk ± ν (Ωk2 = c2k2

Diocotron instability in ultracold plasma

Physical Review E
We present the results of the molecular dynamics simulation of ultracold Xe plasma in constant homogeneous crossed electric and magnetic fields. A Simulation shows that there are two electron loss mechanisms. The first one is that the initial electron cloud splits into two lobes. The second one is that electrons leave the plasma as a beam.

Gravitational Instability of a Magnetized Plasma

Physical Review Letters, 1961
The instability of a plasma supported under gravity by a magnetic field is considered in terms of fluid equations. Mathematical derivations are presented. (L.N.N.)

Transsonic Instabilities in Laboratory and Astrophysical Plasmas

Physica Scripta, 2004
Waves and instabilities of transsonically rotating axisymmetric plasmas present a highly complex problem that is of interest for two unrelated fields of research, viz. laboratory tokamak confinement for the eventual thermonuclear energy production and the dynamics of a vast number of astrophysical plasmas rotating about compact objects, broadly ...

Resistive instabilities in plasma

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1985
Instabilities produced by finite-resistivity effects in a plasma are of great interest in connection with research in fusion devices, solar flares, and geomagnetic substorms. We elucidate here the physical mechanism of this instability, and in particular, identify the tendencies in the system towards the instability and the tendencies opposing it, if ...

Instabilities in a confined plasma

Nuclear Fusion, 1999
This is a large and important work by one of the leading Russian contributors to this subject. It covers topics of central importance to magnetic fusion energy research with a breadth, depth and clarity not found elsewhere. It is intended as a reference book and guide to the original literature for serious practitioners of the field.

Thermoacoustic instability of a plasma

Soviet Physics Journal, 1988
The possibility of the onset of a self-excited instability in a high-temperature plasma as a result of energy released in thermonuclear interactions between ions is discussed, and the resulting instability conditions are used to investigate the behavior of a linear pinch.
