Active renin versus plasma renin activity to define aldosterone-to-renin ratio for primary aldosteronism

Journal of Hypertension, 2004
In recent years, the assessment of the plasma aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) has become an established screening method for the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism. Plasma renin activity (PRA) is usually measured to define ARR although, increasingly, renin concentration alone is often measured in clinical routine. To determine the threshold of ARR ...

Circadian Variations of Total Renin, Active Renin, Plasma Renin Activity and Plasma Aldosterone in Clinically Healthy Young Subjects

Hormone and Metabolic Research, 1990
The direct assay of total renin (TRC) and active renin concentration (ARC) is a reality due to the availability of monoclonal antibodies against human renin. Because of this, a study has been performed in order to assess the circadian rhythmicity of TRC and ARC. The study was extended to plasma renin activity (PRA) and plasma aldosterone concentration (

Measurement of Plasma Renin Activity

2013
This chapter describes the measurement of plasma renin activity by calculation of the quantity of angiotensin I that is released in plasma by the action of endogenous enzyme renin on angiotensinogen, the endogenous substrate. Details are given for the generation of angiotensin I from plasma using controlled pH and temperature conditions.

Measurement of Plasma Renin Activity

2006
Measurement of angiotensin 1, released in plasma by the action of endogenous enzyme renin on endogenous substrate, angiotensinogen is described. Details are given for the generation of angiotensin 1 from plasma using controlled conditions of pH and temperature.

PLASMA RENIN ACTIVITY IN PANHYPOPITUITARISM

Acta Endocrinologica, 1972
ABSTRACT The response of plasma renin activity (PRA) to sodium restriction, furosemide and ACTH administration were studied in six patients with panhypopituitarism of various causes and in a patient with Addison's disease. In all the patients with panhypopituitarism, the basal levels of PRA were within normal limits and the responses of PRA and

Plasma Renin Activity

1994
Renin is a proteolytic enzyme (M.Wt. 40 kDa) released by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney in response to sympathetic neural activity, dehydration, or salt loss.

PLASMA RENIN ACTIVITY IN CHRONIC NEPHROPATHY

Acta Medica Scandinavica, 1970
Abstract. Plasma renin activity (PRA) has been measured in 14 patients with chronic nephropathy maintained on hemodialysis. Most of the patients were hypertensive at the time of measurement, and mean PRA was significantly elevated. No correlation between PRA, mean blood pressure and dialytic controllability of hypertension could be established.

RADIOIMMUNOASSAY DETERMINATION OF PLASMA-RENIN ACTIVITY

The Lancet, 1969
Abstract Both practical and theoretical considerations have made difficult the application of a recently developed angiotensin II immunoassay to the measurement of " plasma-renin activity ", and a separate radioimmunoassay for angiotensin I has therefore been developed.

Plasma renin activity in renovascular hypertension

The American Journal of Medicine, 1968
Abstract Plasma renin activity was measured in forty-eight hypertensive patients with angiographie evidence of unilateral or bilateral occlusive disease of a main stem renal artery. Increased plasma renin activity in patients with unilateral renal arterial lesions was almost always (96 per cent) predictive of a satisfactory response to subsequent and ...

Interpretation of Plasma Renin Activity

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1978
During the past decade many investigators have used plasma renin activity (PRA) to subgroup or "classify" patients with essential hypertension. The yield in clinical terms has been disappointing. Plasma renin activity has failed to consistently reflect prognosis, to accurately predict response to therapy, or even to adequately screen for renovascular ...
