Flow Control Using Plasma Actuators and Linear/Annular Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators

3rd AIAA Flow Control Conference, 2006
This paper investigates the use of dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators in low Re flow control applications. Three different actuator geometries have been tested: a conventional design using two rectangular strip electrodes (the linear actuator) that produces a nearly two-dimensional horizontal wall jet upon actuation, and two new designs that

Flow Characteristics of Synthetic Jet Induced by Plasma Actuator

AIAA Journal, 2011
The flowfield induced by a plasma synthetic jet actuator was investigated by solving Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes equations, augmented with a phenomenological model representing the plasma-induced body force imparted by a plasma actuator on the fluid. Flow characteristics of an unsteady plasma synthetic jet in quiescent air were presented.

PIV and Electric Characterization of a Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuator

45th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference, 2015
The Plasma Synthetic Jet actuator is designed for flow control applications. It generates a synthetic jet by using an electric arc created in a cavity. The velocity fields in the jet are measured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Electric measurements in the discharge circuit are carried out simultaneously. They allow to control the phase of the PIV

Characteristics of repetitive discharges of plasma synthetic jet actuators

2016 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC), 2016
Characteristics of plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) actuators driven by repetitive pulsed discharge have drawn much attention. In this paper, the PSJ actuator is composed of a pair of tungsten electrodes and a boron nitride cavity without a cap. The cavity has a diameter of 8 mm and volume of 400 mm'. The distance between two electrodes ranges from 1 mm to 4

Use of Aggregate Plasma Synthetic Jet Actuators for Flow Control

45th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2007
arrangement of the plasma actuator for certain purposes, producing flow structures similar to conventional synthetic or zero net mass flux actuators. One benefit of the plasma synthetic jet actuator arrangement is that the geometry is easily configured to form either “blowing” (source like or away from the actuator) or “sucking” (sink like or toward ...

Plasma synthetic jet actuator: electrical and optical analysis of the discharge

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2014
Active flow control is based on the development of robust actuators which are reliable, small and easy to integrate. A promising actuator referred to as plasma synthetic jet actuator produces a synthetic jet with high exhaust velocities and holds the promise of enabling high-speed flows.

Influence of air pressure on the performance of plasma synthetic jet actuator

Chinese Physics B, 2016
Plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) has a wide application prospect in the high-speed flow control field for its high jet velocity. In this paper, the influence of the air pressure on the performance of a two-electrode PSJA is investigated by the schlieren method in a large range from 7 kPa to 100 kPa.

Transient ejection phase modeling of a Plasma Synthetic Jet actuator

Physics of Fluids, 2014
For several years, a promising Plasma Synthetic Jet actuator for high-speed flow control has been under development at ONERA. So far, its confined geometry and small space-time scales at play have prevented its full experimental characterization. Complementary accurate numerical simulations are then considered in this study in order to provide a ...

Analytic model and frequency characteristics of plasma synthetic jet actuator

Physics of Fluids, 2015
This paper reports a novel analytic model of a plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA), considering both the heat transfer effect and the inertia of the throat gas. Both the whole cycle characteristics and the repetitive working process of PSJA can be predicted with this model.

Influence of geometrical parameters on performance of plasma synthetic jet actuator

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2015
Plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) has shown wide and promising application prospects in a high speed flow control field, due to its rapid response, high exhaust velocity, and non-moving components. In this paper, the total pressure profile of a plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) is measured and a new method is developed to evaluate the pulsed thrust of the ...
