Specimen Thickness Effects for Elastic-Plastic CTOD Toughness of an A36 Steel

1988
This paper describes the results of an experimental and analytical study of the effect of specimen size on the fracture toughness behavior of A36 steel, primarily in the lower-transition region. This region is beyond the limits of plane strain as defined by ASTM Method E 399, but in the region where failure occurs prior to any macroscopic fibrous ...

Strain-based CTOD estimation formulations for fracture assessment of offshore pipelines subjected to large plastic deformation

Ocean Engineering, 2014
The extreme loading conditions, i.e. the large plastic bending combined with high internal pressure, and the potential cracks or flaws in the welds pose tremendous challenges to the structural integrity for offshore pipelines. In this paper, the fracture response of offshore pipeline with semi-elliptical surface crack under large plastic deformation is

Strain-Based CTOD and J-Integral Estimations for Pipelines With a Surface Crack Under Large Plastic Strain and Internal Pressure

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2020
Abstract Engineering solutions for crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral estimations for pipelines with a surface crack are proposed based on parametric finite element (FE) analyses for various geometries, material properties, and internal pressure conditions.

A Comparison of J and CTOD as Elastic-Plastic Fracture Characterizing Parameters

1995
This paper presents results of experimental and numerical analysis studies to investigate the relationship between J and CTOD and assess whether they are, indeed, both suitable elastic-plastic fracture characterizing parameters. Detailed elastic-plastic finite element analyses were undertaken for SE(B) specimens with a/W ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5.

Plastic collapse loads Pc and CTODs of a cracked Circular Hollow Section (CHS) T-joint

2012
The FailureAssessment Diagram (FAD) is an accepted approach in assessing the structural safety and integrity of any cracked tubular joint. In order to extend its application to a more complex geometry of any cracked Circular Hollow Section (CHS) tubular T-joint, there are three major challenges needed to be overcome; firstly there is a need to validate

CTOD Application to Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics Using Cyclic Ramberg-Osgood Law and HRR Solution

Volume 7: Structures and Dynamics, Parts A and B, 2012
Very often in the open literature the crack propagation simulation is based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics. This article describes a novel application of the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (ΔCTOD) method for evaluation of the cyclic nonlinear energy release rate under large plasticity and cyclic loading conditions. In order to consider

Composite crack profile model for CTOD determination III: An experimental application to elastic-plastic crack growth situations

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1987
Abstract A composite crack profile (CCP) model has been applied for the evaluation of CTOD in the elastic-plastic crack growth situations prevailing in a structural steel. The results have been compared with the ones obtained by conventional method (using plastic hinge model such as Wells etc.) The CTOD-Resistance Curves (δR-curves) have also been ...

An Elastic-Plastic Finite-Element Analysis of the J-Resistance Curve Using a CTOD Criterion

1988
The tentative test procedure for determining J-R curves (crack-growth resistance curves based on the J-integral) on compact and three-point bend specimens showed a discrepancy between specimen types: the bend specimen gave a higher J-R curve than the compact specimen.

Effects of Weld Strength Mismatch on J and CTOD Estimation Procedures for SENT Fracture Specimens Based on Plastic Eta-Factors

Volume 3: Materials Technology; Jan Vugts Symposium on Design Methodology of Offshore Structures; Jo Pinkster Symposium on Second Order Wave Drift Forces on Floating Structures; Johan Wichers Symposium on Mooring of Floating Structures in Waves, 2011
This work focuses on the evaluation procedure to determine the elastic-plastic fracture toughness J-integral and CTOD based upon the η-method for welded SENT fracture specimens with clamped ends. The primary objective is to gain additional understanding on the effect of weld strength mismatch on estimation techniques to determine J and CTOD fracture ...

Plasticity-Induced Crack Closure Under Thermomechanical Fatigue Loading: Influence of Phase Relationship and Plasticity Model on Crack Closure, Ctod, Ratcheting and Numerical Stability

In this work, plasticity-induced crack closure is studied under strain-controlled in-phase and out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) loading using the finite element method. The influence of the TMF phase, the applied strain ratio and the material model on the crack opening stress and the crack tip opening displacement is investigated. Therefore,
