A method for the metallographical measurement of the CTOD at cracking initiation and the role of reverse plasticity on unloading

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2000
A method is proposed for accurately estimating the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) at physical cracking initiation in ductile materials. The method requires a few precracked specimens to be loaded in such a way as to exhibit various crack extensions.

Elastic-plastic fracture toughness of PC/ABS blend based on CTOD and J-integral methods

Polymer, 1996
Abstract The elastic-plastic fracture toughness of a PC/ABS blend has been investigated simultaneously by the conventional J-integral and the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) methods for specimen thickness varying from 4 to 15 mm. The critical J (Jc) and the critical CTOD (δc) are based on crack initiation.

Measurements of CTOD and CTOA Around Surface-Crack Perimeters and Relationships Between Elastic and Elastic-Plastic CTOD Values

1990
A difficulty associated with predicting structural integrity is that the surface cracks found in structural components are three-dimensional whereas the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral analytical techniques were derived from two-dimensional theory.

Specimen Thickness Effects for Elastic-Plastic CTOD Toughness of an A36 Steel

1988
This paper describes the results of an experimental and analytical study of the effect of specimen size on the fracture toughness behavior of A36 steel, primarily in the lower-transition region. This region is beyond the limits of plane strain as defined by ASTM Method E 399, but in the region where failure occurs prior to any macroscopic fibrous ...

Strain-based CTOD estimation formulations for fracture assessment of offshore pipelines subjected to large plastic deformation

Ocean Engineering, 2014
The extreme loading conditions, i.e. the large plastic bending combined with high internal pressure, and the potential cracks or flaws in the welds pose tremendous challenges to the structural integrity for offshore pipelines. In this paper, the fracture response of offshore pipeline with semi-elliptical surface crack under large plastic deformation is

Strain-Based CTOD and J-Integral Estimations for Pipelines With a Surface Crack Under Large Plastic Strain and Internal Pressure

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2020
Abstract Engineering solutions for crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral estimations for pipelines with a surface crack are proposed based on parametric finite element (FE) analyses for various geometries, material properties, and internal pressure conditions.

A Comparison of J and CTOD as Elastic-Plastic Fracture Characterizing Parameters

1995
This paper presents results of experimental and numerical analysis studies to investigate the relationship between J and CTOD and assess whether they are, indeed, both suitable elastic-plastic fracture characterizing parameters. Detailed elastic-plastic finite element analyses were undertaken for SE(B) specimens with a/W ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5.

CTOD Application to Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics Using Cyclic Ramberg-Osgood Law and HRR Solution

Volume 7: Structures and Dynamics, Parts A and B, 2012
Very often in the open literature the crack propagation simulation is based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics. This article describes a novel application of the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (ΔCTOD) method for evaluation of the cyclic nonlinear energy release rate under large plasticity and cyclic loading conditions. In order to consider

Plastic collapse loads Pc and CTODs of a cracked Circular Hollow Section (CHS) T-joint

2012
The FailureAssessment Diagram (FAD) is an accepted approach in assessing the structural safety and integrity of any cracked tubular joint. In order to extend its application to a more complex geometry of any cracked Circular Hollow Section (CHS) tubular T-joint, there are three major challenges needed to be overcome; firstly there is a need to validate
