Rotational Stability of Plastic Hinges
ce/papers, 2021AbstractThis paper is part of a larger project that considers the design of large steel‐framed warehouses and distribution centres (‘Big Sheds’) in the context of the SCOSS Alert “Effects of Scale” [1]. These buildings are currently designed to Standards and design procedures that were intended for much smaller structures, and are now long out of date.

A VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE FOR PLASTIC HINGES IN A BEAM
Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, 2009We focus on a variational model of an elastic–plastic beam which is clamped at both endpoints and subject to a transverse L∞ load: the mathematical formulation is a 1D free discontinuity problem with second-order energy dependent on gradient-jump integrals but not on the cardinality of gradient-discontinuity set.

Journal of Structural Engineering, 2001
Predicting behavior of plastic hinges subjected to large inelastic deformations caused by extreme loads such as earthquakes plays an important role in assessing maximum stable deformation capacities of framed concrete structures. This paper presents an analytical procedure that can be used to predict the behavior of plastic hinges in reinforced ...

Spread of Plasticity: Quasi‐Plastic‐Hinge Approach
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1994The paper describes a method of inelastic analysis for steel frames that provides the accuracy of distributed plasticity methods with the computational efficiency of elastic‐plastic‐hinge methods. It accounts for spread‐of‐plasticity effects without the need for through‐section and lengthwise discretization of a beam‐column element.
