Plastic Hinging in Reinforced Concrete
Journal of the Structural Division, 1966The complete load-deflection history of 18 beams tested during 1952-54 and 18 beams tested during 1959-61 at the Univ. of Ill. allowed a study of the factors which contribute to ductility. All tests involved simple spans with load applied through a column stub at midspan to simulate the beam-column connection in a reinforced concrete frame.

Thermodynamics of plastic hinges with damage
Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, 1991This nice study treats the embedding of the planar bending problem of an elastic bar with plastic hinges in equilibrium thermodynamics. At first, the balances of momentum, angular momentum and energy are stated, then the entropy balance is formulated and discussed after introducing a damage hypothesis.

The plastic hinge concept was introduced in Chapter 1 when the “hinge-by-hinge” method was applied to solve the fixed-ended beam problems. In this chapter, we shall elaborate the concept of the plastic hinge and plastic moment. The methods of computing the plastic moment and the methods of using plastic moment in the design of a cross section will be ...

Plastic Shear Hinges in Steel Frames
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1983A mechanism for use in the limit analysis of steel frames where yielding arises in webs of members from couples of closely spaced forces is developed. This mechanism, called the shear hinge, is based upon the shear-moment interaction of the short portion of beam bounded by the couple.

‘Living’, plastic or molded-in hinges are integrated and flexible connections between two pieces of a molded polymer part. Due to the hinges, a motion of the two pieces relative to each other is possible. The main advantage of plastic hinges is the simultaneous production of the polymer part as well as the hinge. Because of this single production step,

Abstract Analog techniques are frequently useful to the engineer when solving design problems. A simple d.c. electrical analog is described which enables the design engineer to locate and quantify the formation of plastic hinges in steel frame construction.

The plastic hinge is a key concept of the theory of frames that differentiates this theory from the remaining models for structural analysis. This chapter is exclusively dedicated to define this concept and describe the different models of plastic hinges.

Plastic Hinge and Plastic Zone Seismic Analysis of Frames
2015The most common approach to perform seismic design of structures is the traditional one based on a linear elastic analysis assumption. On the other hand, nonlinear analysis methods due to their higher complexity and computational cost are mainly applied as a verification tool for the assessment of existing structures.

Second-Order Plastic Hinge Analysis
1995During the past 20 years, numerous analytical models have been developed for second-order inelastic analysis of steel frames. In general, these models may be categorized into two main types: (1) plastic zone and (2) plastic hinge. The plastic-zone model follows explicitly the gradual spread of yielding throughout the volume of the structure ...

Plastic hinge approach to vehicle crash simulation
Computers & Structures, 1983Abstract This paper presents a computer-based method for formulation and efficient solution of nonlinear, constrained differential equations of motion for spatial dynamic analysis of mechanical systems and its application to vehicle crash simulations.
