Lumped Deformations: a Plastic Hinge Approach
2009The design requirements of advanced mechanical and structural systems exploit the ease of use of the powerful computational resources available today to create virtual prototyping environments. These advanced simulation facilities play a fundamental role in the study of systems that undergo large rigid body motion while their components experience ...

Rigid Multibody Systems: The Plastic Hinge Approach
2001Multibody systems are generally complex arrangements of structural and mechanical subsystems with different design purposes and mechanical behavior. Depending on the type of applications, operating speeds, external or internal loading of the components, the multibody system may experience small or large deformations that lead to a change of the system ...

Size effects in plastic hinges of reinforced concrete members [PDF]
Reasons for size dependence of rotation capacity of plastic hinges are discussed. The increase of ductility with decreasing member size is interpreted from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics of concrete. The results of the introductory test series on simply supported slender beams loaded in three-point bending are discussed.

Plastic hinge formation in elbows and curved tubing
International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 1984Abstract Cross-section flattening of a piping elbow or curved thin-walled tube may be described by four plastic hinges. The present paper presents an analysis of the plastic hinge formation using the methods of toroidal elasticity. This enables one to identify the location of first yielding which generally, but not necessarily, occurs on the inner ...

A model for plastic hinges in tubular beams impact
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1997Abstract A numerical model for the analysis of hollow beams impact has been developed. The moment–rotation relationship of a plastic hinge is used in a nonlinear, implicit code for transient analysis. The moment–rotation curve is obtained from a basic skeleton curve by adding a second one with irreversible characteristics. Both models may be selected

Frame Response Considering Plastic Panel Hinges
Engineering Journal, 1994The AISC-LRFD Specification designates connections as fully restrained (FR) or partially restrained (PR). Only a beam-to-column connection that has sufficient rigidity to hold the original angles between members unchanged may be considered as Type FR. The quantification of this requirement has been left to the judgment of the structural engineer.
