Effect of circular holes on the ratchet limit and crack tip plastic strain range in a centre cracked plate

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper a centre cracked plate subjected to cyclic tensile loading and cyclic bending moment is considered. The effect of circular holes drilled in the region of the crack tip on the ratchet limit and crack tip plastic strain range is studied ...

Why is local stress statistics normal, and strain lognormal?

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2021
In the present study we elucidate the nature of local strain statistics evolution during tensile deformation in polycrystalline materials. A rate-independent formulation was implemented within a crystal plasticity framework by the means of representative

Plastic Strain Curl Theory

open access: yes, 2004
The main mechanisms for the hardening of metal materials are the multiplication, accumulation and interaction of dislocations. The dislocation density tensor can be decomposed into two parts: one is the plastic strain curl tensor and the other is the ...

Plastic load evaluation for a fixed tube sheet heat exchanger subject to proportional loading

open access: yes, 2012
The plastic load of pressurised components can be calculated based on both the twice elastic slope and tangent methods. Both methods are problematic since they rely on parameters that are localised and therefore have a strong dependency on the gradient ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A Study on Sandstone Damage Model Based on the Correlation Between Energy Dissipation and Plastic Strain

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The process of rock damage and failure is accompanied by the dissipation of energy and an increase in plastic strain. This study attempts to determine the relationship between dissipated energy and plastic strain in sandstone during the damage and ...

Detection of plastic strain using GNSS data of pre- and post-seismic deformation of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2020
In general, there are three mechanisms causing crustal deformation: elastic, viscous, and plastic deformation. The separation of observed crustal deformation to each component has been a challenging problem.

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
